BMW /5 toaster-tank cafe

Re: BMW R60/5 -- Finished! pics

Thanks guys! It has been a fun and educating project. Flashgolly, you should check out Cafematty's bike for some BMW inspiration. That bike is killer.

Re: BMW R60/5 -- Finished! pics

Can't go wrong with such a sparkling airhead, I dig the stonegaurd on the headlight too. The only thing that would make it perfect is a little scuff on those tires :)

Re: BMW R60/5 -- Finished! pics

Thanks guys! I will make sure to piss on the ol lemon tree.

"These brakes, they're completely inadequate!"
"I'm planning on going, not stopping!"

Re: BMW R60/5 -- Finished! pics

I just took a read through this bike. Very, very clean, sir. Congrats on a job well done.

Re: BMW R60/5 -- Finished! pics

Thanks guys. I like the hammerheads. They are a little on the stiff side, but I like them. Just got done repacking the mufflers with some heavy duty baffle packing. They have a deeper, better sound now. The packing that they came with was crap, already falling apart.

Re: BMW R60/5 -- few changes

Been a while-- figure I would update some changes. Converted the /5 alternator (13 amp) to a /6 alternator (20 amp). H4 headlight conversion. New gas-cap. Went back to full length intake and UNI pod filters. New speedo. Modified block-off plate with catch tank and breather. And, I decided to put a nice leather wrap on the grab bar to match the handlebar grips 8) Refurbished back wheel (Blasted rim, new spokes, new bearings). Also decided to upgrade my $40 helmet, haha.

Next up: larger oil sump pan, rear sets, small lithium battery mounted in seat.

Anybody have any good suggestions on small lithium batteries??

Re: BMW /5 toaster cafe-- stator and diode board upgrade

Thought I would post these pics for anybody who is looking to upgrade the under-powered alternator on the BMW /5 models. The stock will only put out 13 amps, wheres the /6 will put out 20. With the stock my charging light was always on at idle... not good. The bottom pic is the stock stator. Notice the lack of connection on the bottom left side of the stator. Top pic is after I installed a 1976 R90/6 stator and /6 diode board. Notice the addition of the connector on the bottom left side of the stator and the left side of the diode board. If you don't wire up the two connections the new stator and board will still only make 13 amps (or less). Note the three wire connection at the bottom right has changed-- this is because the old one was almost rotted away inside. One easy pull and two wires tore out :(

Anyway, thought I would share :)

Heading to Corbin in Hollister on Saturday to pick out materials for my gunfighter seat. They got a sweet "ride-in" deal where you show up, pick out material, and a few hours later you have a new seat. I decided the knock off seat wasn't cutting it. Time to get a real leather seat and why not go to Corbin and watch them make? I also get my rear sets from Boxer Metal on Tuesday and am super excited to mount em!

Re: BMW /5 toaster cafe-- stator and diode board upgrade

Awesome man. This is one of the first major things I did to my bike. Except I went the EnDuraLast route. It's a mean little dude, but Im thinking about toning it bak down some. It became noticing slower to rev and slower to stop. Haha.

While you're in there you should do a way with that charging light circuit so the whole thing doesn't hinge on one bulb.

Is that the circuit right above the stator? I thought about going the EnDuraLast route as well-- does seem like a badass setup!

Re: BMW /5 toaster cafe-- stator and diode board upgrade

No. Its the gen light itself. Basically, the charging system is completely dependent on the resistance from that bulb. So if the bulb burns out, your bike won't charge. (found this out the hard way)

This is the mod to bypass this.

Oh wow-- that seems like a terrible design. Good to know and I will do the mod. When I bought the bike there were no bulbs working, haha. Must have not been charging at all.

Do not question zee Germans.

No but seriously. Crazy shiz man. Either do the mod or keep an extra bulb on you. Lol.

Re: BMW /5 toaster cafe-- stator and diode board upgrade

I've had the exact same issue with e30 chassis BMW autos. That was a hell of a problem to chase down until I realized that the bulb completed part of the charging system circuit. A failure of the warning system causes a failure of the entire system!?!?!?
