BMW R100 Cafe Conversion Project

Hi Guys,

I'm new here and just sold my old K75S sport tourer to follow a long standing dream of mine, an airhead cafe racer. Picked up an 1982 R100.

I'm looking for some information on where to track down fairings, cafe tail custom jobs and other cafe conversion parts. http://www.flatracer.com/ seems good but very expensive; FlatRacer has those great swooping fairings that make the bikes look like rockets -- definitely want one of those -- but $500 for a fairing kit? Jeez.

Let me know where you chaps pick up your kit.

Looking forward to actively participating in this community.

Welcome to DTT!

www.roccitycafe.com has glass seats and stuff (plus he's a member). If you do a google search for "airtech fiberglass" or "glass from the past" you will find a couple more good sites.

Definitely check out the sites Big Rich mentioned, good solid advice. One thing caught my eye though:

but $500 for a fairing kit? Jeez.

If thats a full fairing with paint and mounting provisions thats a hell of a deal. Even just a painted full-fairing would make that a good deal if the quality was there. I'm not surwe what you are willing to spend on the Beemer but make sure you don't go lowball on the fairings - cheap stuff cracks easily and may not stand up too well at speed or over rough roads.

Cheers - boingk

The best fairing for a BMW R100 is the stock R100RS. You could look around at swap meets or on the internet for fairing parts and piece one together slowly, but you would have to get it painted. The hardest part of this is finding the fairing mounts that bolt to your frame. By '81 I think all R100 frames were drilled by the factory for the RS/RT fairings, check behind your headlight and look for two drilled and tapped holes in the head stock. On my old '79 RS I only ran the upper fairing because, being Florida, the lowers would cook your feet behind the jugs, nice in the winter though. Or just go with the R90S style. Either way, it'll save you a lot of fabrication time.

For fairings I like the more swept back Ducati 900SS style personally - somehow a little more 'racy'. But then again, I don't have any fairings on my bikes ;)

Good choice on the R100. I have a 1975 R75/6 and love it. It's a stock bike though as I use it for long distance riding (maybe I should have a fairing on that one :D).

+1 on Roccity - good guy and offers good pricing to our members. Nothing but good things have been said about him.

There's an AWESOME BMW cafe on this site - won Bike of the Month not long ago. Miob's BMW:
