Boingk's Budget GS850 [Sold...]

Re: Boingk's Budget GS850 [Seat complete]

You definitely don't muck around do ya...

IMO, those seat pads need some work though. You've got to make that rear pad follow the profile of your seat. It would not be that hard to do. The vinyl on the main section looks a little loose.

How do you reckon you will go with rego?

Re: Boingk's Budget GS850 [Seat complete]

I reckon rego is a bit far away to do much about it at the moment. I've made a list of 'to do' items:

Do seat *
Change oils *
Clean Carbys *
Tune Carbys
Check timing
Fit handgrips
Fit pods/airbox
New brake calipers/fluid
Sort electrical system/lights

The starred ones have been sorted, the last one only needs fitting of flasher unit, indicators and a headlight to be done. Everything else will be pretty straight forward. The top pad is definitely a 'redo' item for me, its bugging me more and more by sticking out like that. Might have a shot at it while I'm down at the snow, haha.

The main section is actually fairly tight, but its been a pain to try and mask the bulges in the fibreglass. If I were doing it again I'd definitely stuff the stock setup off and chop some frame... a future project perhaps. The bulges caused by the frame tabs are just too hard to mask out.

Part of the reason I picked up a project is because I'm on a Provisional licence until April next year. Gives me plenty of time to sort out bugs and make everything schmick before I can rego and ride it.

Hows your ride going, anyway?

Re: Boingk's Budget GS850 [Seat complete]

Slow at the moment,

I want to get it ready so I can ride it to the Moto GP at Phillip Island.

But I still have to do the seat, rear sets and lights.......

Here's a pic taken last week...

Re: Boingk's Budget GS850 [Headlight & indicators]

Righteo, long time and not much progress. Snowboarding and work got in the way, haha. I dredged up some indicators a while ago, as well as an enduro-style headlight shroud more recently which I mocked up and then sprayed black this afternoon. Heres a few pics:

Bit insane, bit minimalist...bit illegal actually, but thats a technicality so I just ignored it. I'll get a few more pics up when its painted and striped, hopefully with a set of indicators hanging off of it. Until then, some chrome pod filters are en route from Thailand...or someplace.

Cheers guys - boingk

Still needs to be properly hard-mounted, should be an easy job seeing as it has tabs on the back. Otherwise, this is pretty much how its gonna look once the bike is on the road.

Re: Boingk's Budget GS850 [Headlight/Cowl finished]

Hey BoingK,

You've got a real "riders of the apocalypse" thing going on here. Keep it up.

The world is watching.

Re: Boingk's Budget GS850 [Headlight/Cowl finished]

Cheers for the words seven, interesting you might say that actually...bit of a backstory. Not so much of a story, more of an influence perspective. One of my favourite all-time movies is Mad Max; coupled with childhood videogames like 'Road Rash' and 'F-Zero X' I'm not surprised this has come out looking the way it has!

The biggest laugh, however, will be the gear that I'm gonna ride it in... ;D

I could see Jim Goose on something like that...................

Re: Boingk's Budget GS850 [Headlight/Cowl finished]

Goose, hey? Haha, what about Toecutter? ;D

Fiction aside, bounced back to reality with a knock at the door. My pod filters had arrived! Nice, straight up to the garage to fit them.

Here they are in all their chrome glory:

And again, after mounting:

Haven't got around to rejetting or even testing them yet on the bike; the battery has gone flat because its been cold lately. Hell, I've been slack starting it every once in a while as well. I'm pleased with the pods though, only AU$37 delivered to my door from China. Took about a week after payment went through, I'm stoked.

Cheers all - boingk

Re: Boingk's Budget GS850 [Pod filters fitted]

Cheers JRK! Easy to get as well, they're popular on dirt bikes around here so they don't immediately trash the stock sealed beam unit when the bike takes a fall. How's your TX going anyways? Any more progres with wiring/painting?

That aside, the GS got fired up last night after a stint on the charger. Intake sounds brutal, just a massive sucking rush. Kinda like that massive beast that ate the pyramid in the second Transformers movie, hahaha! Only thing is that the bike still doesn't want to rev very much at all, bogs down after 3,000rpm and doesn't want to run when the choke gets turned off.

I'm guessing the pilot and main jets need changing, does anyone else have any experience they'd mind sharing? I'm running total stock at the moment.

Cheers - boingk

Re: Boingk's Budget GS850 [Advice needed on jetting w/pods & 4-1 zorst]

goign to have to look at the plugs for that one... they will tell you if you need to go up or down. I would imagine you need to go up, but i am not sure.
TX is still on the table  i know... i know... my buddy Danny is coming over this weekend to help me get the wiring all figured out... i am stuck, my tank, seat, and side cover went out to my buddy for custom paint (wedding present) he did everything in Glacier white and added a heavy pearl to it... should look dope!

sounds like you might want to check the petcock - and fuel feed, mine did the same thing because of a vacuum leak - fliped the petcock to "prime" rather than "on" and it cleared right up - may not be the case with yours but way easier than getting back into the carbs and way cheaper than rejetting...might be worth a look - good luck

Re: Boingk's Budget GS850 [Advice needed on jetting w/pods & 4-1 zorst]

Boingk-

Have you checked out www.thegsresources.com? There are some really good technical people on there. The GS850 is a weird egg. The combination of components to make it an 850 are really fussy and difficult to tune. There are few that can get pods and a 4-1 running on one without a bog at 5k rpm.

Re: Boingk's Budget GS850 [Advice needed on jetting w/pods & 4-1 zorst]

Looking good BoingK!

I know I'm a little late to the party on this one, but did you lay the seat glass right on the bike? How did you keep from getting resin on everything? I see you put a cloth over the tank, but what about the shocks, frame, etc?

Re: Boingk's Budget GS850 [Advice needed on jetting w/pods & 4-1 zorst]

JRK - White w/pearl? Nice. My bro's RS125 has that colour for most of it, looks great. It'll blow your mind! Congrats on getting hitched as well, man.

Customs - Thanks for the tip, might check it out. I drained the tank after getting things as good as they'd get with the air screws anyway, so might be time to see whats holding this petcock up... Did you just leave it on 'prime', or did you remove and flush it?

afastman - Yeah, I've checked there a bit. Most of what I've read seems to be "run the stock box, pods won't work", but one guys swears by a mainjet size *down*. Definitely weird stuff. I'm determined to find the problem, though, and make this setup work. I've found a few 'kits' on eBay that look alright, but am thinking of just ordering a bunch of main sizes. I swear if I was running Dellorto's (like on my 125) the problem would have been recitfied already; they really are nice carbys.

dcwp - Better late than never! Yeah, I lay the glass right on there. I formed the shape with florist foam (try GoLo or The Warehouse) and covered that with a lot of glad wrap. Seemed to work pretty well, I was careful with applying the resin though. Got a small drop on the tyre and one on a footpeg but that was it. Frame, shocks etc came out fine. Take it you're thinking of making a cowl?

Re: Boingk's Budget GS850 [Advice needed on jetting w/pods & 4-1 zorst]

Thanks for the info.

Yep, I've been waffling on where to go with my seat. I'm thinking now of making a bump stop seat with a sort of skirt that hangs low and hides the dip in my frame. (partially inspired by Oz Customs)I'm also thinking of making it fit the frame without cutting so I can swap to two-up when the wife wants a ride and maybe eventually make a more brat style pan with glass.

One step at a time for now since I've never used fiberglass before (well almost never). This thread is great for inspiration; you make it look so easy!

Yeah? Thanks! Perhaps I should show a few 'disaster pics', hahaha... You know, stuff like the gear oil filler bolt thats rounded and won't budge

Anywho, found what looks like a no-nonsense carb tuning guide. Pretty much what I've done in the past, but put down on paper in order. I like the fact that it's put into words what I've usually only been able to describe as 'strangled is lean, boggy and stumbly is rich'. Link below. Meanwhile, I think I'm gonna have to strip and refurbish the petcock on my machine, as well as order a few sizes of mainjets.

Re: Boingk's Budget GS850 [Advice needed on jetting w/pods & 4-1 zorst]

Mainjets got delivered today, as well as a Holley for my Valiant...but thats another story. I'd decided on some 125s and 130s, so went about fitting the carbies with the 125 mains to replace the woeful 115's.

Much better! Clean revving off the bottom and then right to the top...bit of backfiring around 7k though. Good thing I bought those extra jets then, and on they went after another carby strip-down times four.

With the 130's straddling the mainjet position, the bike is running brilliantly. Its seems to have a minor oil leak from a sidecover, but I've got a gasket for that so no worries. Theres a wonderful scream all the way to redline from the baffleless 4-1 exhaust and a brutal intake rush from the pods. Its like a monster, roaring and hissing at you...waiting to be unleashed.

One technicality - can't ride this bike [legally] until I'm off my provisional licence. Thats until April next year. AHHHHH!!!

Til next time - boingk
