Bonneville or bust

Well, the ride isn't so bad once your ass loses all feeling. The bike is in worse shape than I am and I'm askin a lot from it. I think it will need a complete dissmantle when I get home. The new chain has streatched to the point the axle will not move any futher back. Looks like I will be buying another chain in De moines Iowa. It seems when I'm on the centre stand and snug up the chain I spin the wheel and the chain will tighten, losen, tighten, losen....its like one of the spokets is out of round. Can. This happen? Should I be looking elswhere? Bearings don't feel hot at all and no play in the rear wheel. Anyone have sugestions?

Are you accelerating to hard from stop?...
The chain is streatching in certain areas. I would change the front & rear sprockets along with the chain if you can... Also pick up some chain lube and spray it every 500kms or so!!

A new chain will not stretch quickly or in certain spots. Sprockets are not perfect and can be out of round. Definitely should always replace sprockets and chain together to ensure even consistent wear on the chain, but it won't cause loose/tight situations.

Sounds like the new chain is simply too long for your sprockets. It may also be that the sprockets are smaller than stock, if the wheel is pulled all the way back with a stock length chain.

I'd be replacing the sprockets with stock size units and make sure the chain is cut to the right length.

WELCOME BACK!

Thats a damn good point.. Did you cut/shorten the chain, (after you counted the links), before you put on the new one?
I just assumed that you had shortened the chain with the correct number of links before you put it on!!..

Yeah.. welcome back!!..
LEts see the pics!!

Well, it turns out it was a couple of things that caused the chain to go in the first place and un equal lengths on the streatched second chain. The first chain I should have replaced and was debating weather or not to change it before the trip...I should have changed it befor the trip. Second was going with a non "o"ring chain and using a "o"ring chain lube on the second chain. I figured lube is lube right? I can honestly tell you that the new chain that was replaced in Utah was rusty and squeeking 1000 miles in and also very hot to the touch (causing the uneven streatching from the heat)and when replaced with the "o"ring chain and using a very good chain lube there was absolutley no heat, no streatch and felt very smooth at 120MPH :) so there you have it. BUY GOOD LUBE....designed for the aplication.

Cheers all and the last run to the border was 690miles...put that in ur pipe n smoke it Tim :)

I'm payin for it no lol.

Goin for a massage now...the legit one.
Hahaha

Glad you are back.

I might have a decent touring/sport bike for ya... GS1100? with GSXR suspension???? :p

So, let me get this straight...

First chain: Old chain you already had on the bike. It snapped and damaged your bike.
Second chain: Standard chain (non o/x-ring). You lubed it with o-ring lube and it broke/stretched beyond use.
Third chain: O-ring chain that is good to go.

WTF is o-ring lube? All my chain lubes just say 'wax chain lube' or something similar. Was your second chain a used chain or new?

Second chain brand new out of the box. QP brand non "o"ring. 3rd chain and "o"ring is an RX..i think...just needed to get on the road and wasnt paying too much attn to the brands.

Either way if your going on a long hawl replace old chain, lube with good lube every 200miles and check or replace tires before the trip....my tires have squared off in the centre and they need replacing. They were fine before the trip. 4300miles + wil do that :p

The trip was amazing and Mike and I were on the same level when it came to calling it a day and such. Great road companion for sure. Cheers Mike and thanks for offering me to go on the trip. Great memories and stories for sure especially from the ol coots on the salt flats.

Sounds like a blast. Reminds me of The FiveFiveFive. My dad was out there with his car nut buddies and said it was great fun. But he flew there. ;)

I asked. He said he didn't see some poor sap pushing his bike down the road. :D

Finally got a chance to download my phone pics. Enjoy :p
