Brake lights in the minimalist sense.

RustyRivets

Suck it, Trebek.
Ok, so I'd like to start off by saying I am very new to the forum, so I apologize if I was unable to find the right thread/post in the right topic.

Now then, I have a '76 Cj-360T that I chopped the fender off of and trimmed the frame to the bracket that the fender used to mount to. (see pic) I have constructed a new much smaller fender out of fiberglass (first time working with fiberglass), and an intermediate piece between the tank and seat. I had earlier purchased one of those model-T brake-light/license plate brackets off ebay, but as the build progressed, I feel that I would rather not have a big-ole' brake light....

SO, what I would like to do is, mount a set of 2 small red LEDs inside the frame where I have trimmed it. Are there kits for this by any chance? If not I assume it's a matter of purchasing some kind of rubber grommets that fit snuggly inside the frame and running wires to them. I'm not sure as to where to begin on this/ where to look for such grommets.

Also, I'm sorry the pics aren't all that specific. I will be in the shop tomorrow to get a better pic, if it is needed.

Thanks much!

Could see if you can find these in red?

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Button-12v-Amber-LED-Side-Indicator-light-Repeater-GOOD-/230837333852?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item35befa2f5c

Or have a seperate red light and mount these amber ones in side the frame tubes as indicators?

Hmmm....that looks like a good lead. I'm going to bug the seller, and see if he's got any in red.

Thanks, Sean!

Am I to assume that the lack of replies means it's a bad idea??

The lack of replies is probably due to the fact that you posted this 2 hours ago, and guys are most likely out riding or wrenching.
I personally think a larger brake/turn/tail light is the way to go. Im not saying the HUGE stock unit, but the model t unit you were thinking of using. People in cages dont see us as it is, and having small brake lights will only make you less visible.
That being said, i have seen lights like you are looking for somewhere...but cant seem to locate them. Hopefully someone will chime in soon.

Right, sorry, I get impatient sometimes + am kind of new to forums.

I understand the need for proper lighting, especially when it comes to brake lights. This could be why I teeter back and forth between these options. I suppose that they would have to be "bright enough" for me to use them. IE, test them at night to see if they're satisfactory.

And the lack of being able to find them may indicate negative feedback in the product.

Ok so, this seller only ships within the UK, which I am not in. AND is apparently impossible to contact through ebay....weird, but that's just the way the cookie crumbles I guess. Thanks anyway. :)

Check out this source for LED component lights:

Keep in mind that white LED's don't give much light through a red lens. Better to use a red LED with a clear lens.

Here's what I did for turn signals...

12 gauge shotgun shell end with primer replaced with red led from superbrightleds.com. the 12 volt led came with a bezel that fit perfectly in the primer port

Hey Bro, welcome. Anyways, check out this link: http://www.amazon.com/Motorcycle-Corner-Signal-Marker-Light/dp/B006B3CMD8. I was thinking of doing the same thing. If you have the know how, you could replace the leds with red ones OR fashion out a red lens to get the red color you need to be legal. Check with your local PD, you might even be able to get away with using a red light for your plate which would cover your running light and then use the LEDs as brake/turn signals. Just some ideas for ya. The other thing you could do is weld up some more tubes side by side and run a few sets to get the turnsignals, running lights and brake lights. Just some ideas.

Depending on where you are located, The Po-Po may find the light doesn't comply with local laws. The laws in every state differ, as well as different countries.

They also are sometimes odd. In NJ, if you have turn signals, they must meet code and function properly. If you take the signals off, you can use hand signals.

So from a legal sense, non-functioning signals are a no-no, but no signals are o.k....weird..

Same with tail lights. The height and size are often regulated. So if you use a "legal" tail light, from another vehicle, or has a DOT stamp on it, that is different than stock, O.K., but if you don't say, meet DOT regulation for brightness and reflectivity, you may get equipment tickets.

Not saying don't do it, but you may want to check the local rules about lights, placement and other requirements.

I have a modulating headlight, legal in all 50, and I carry a copy of the DOT regulation authorizing the use. I have only been stopped 4 times in as many years, but if I didn't prove the light was legal on the spot, I would have had to fight the ticket.

Heres what i did for my tail light .....

But now that Alpha said a clear lens might have to look into one !
