brake line question.

The front brake lines for my XS 500 are in need of replacement. I was going to order a 26" braided line from DC and was wondering if it would be ok to hook it from the master cylinder to the secondary, bypassing the little jumper hooked to the headlight. any problems?

Do you mean bypass the brake light switch? Not a problem as long as you either don't care about the brake light or can find another way of activating it.

The "jumper" is your brake light switch. If you bypass it with a single hose, you can install a banjo bolt that has a brake switch built in at the master cylinder, then run the wires to the ones that you disconnect at the "jumper".

Lots of places to get a banjo bolt switch. Here's one:

Yeah I meant caliper when I said "secondary." and I'm not talking about the switch, I'm talking about the hydraulic "buffer" or "jumper" (I'm not sure how to describe it) that splits the distance from the master to the caliper. There are two lines on my front brake, one that connects the master to this thing and then a line from that to the caliper. My question is can I bypass that thing and go straight from the master to the caliper with no problems? Or was the master designed to have the resistance of that little thing to stage up or down the hydraulic pressure or what? ???

Sorry...looks like the "jumper" is not the switch as is the case with Hondas. Your switch is up at the hand control. The "jumper", as far as I know, does not have any effect on the hydraulics. Replacing it and your two-piece hose with a single hose will be just fine. Did the same on a Yamaha FJ I had years ago, but replaced a 3-piece hose to dual disks with 2 stainless braided hoses. Got great results.
