Brake upgrade?

Hi, I have lurked around here for awhile but this is my first post. I have a 78 gs 750e and the front disk are really heavy and kind of gouged up.(when I bought it and put in the new pads and caliper seals and all that came out was metal backing plates.) I also have a 80 750e that has drilled rotors in much better shape and calipers that take the square pads. But because the 80 forks are leading edge the calipers are not deep enough to go down over the rotors and bolt on. Its only off very little so I don't think I can make a bracket that would work. They are both 35mm fork tubes so I could just slip the fork tubes right in. But I was wondering if changing to leading edge forks would negatively change the way it handles? Any suggestions, theories, or advise would be appreciated. Thanks
