Brand new to all of this! Honda cb900 super sport

Hey I'm from new york i work as a messenger and needed more excitement so i picked up an 82 Honda cb900 super sport and i am in love. I've been reading a lot and I want to get into working on the bike, if anyone has D.I.Y tips as i start this adventure they're greatly appreciated!

Agreed. Grab a factory service manual (you should be able to find one at cb1100f or one of the other DOHC forums) and run through it.

that's actually a very pretty bike!

service it and when you got a bit of technical knowlege buy yourself a less good looking smaller bike to convert to learn from.

Get your feet wet by downloading a factory service manual and doing routine maintenance to familiarize yourself with it. Work your way up to more complicated stuff like a valve adjustment once you feel confident. If you want to really modify a bike get another one in worse shape.
 
Take the bike completely apart. Disassemble the engine to make sure everything inside is all right. Then take an angle grinder to the frame and cut off anything that you think you might not need. It doesn't matter if you don't know what it's for.

Take wire cutters to the wiring harness and chop it into bits. You will want to re-wire it anyway to simplify the wiring. Doesn't matter if you don't know anything about wiring or can't read a wiring diagram.

This will help you really learn about your bike and working on them. If you ever get it back together, you will be proud to own a motorcycle that is truly your bike.

At least, this is what quite a few first time bike owners do, so it must be the right approach. ;)

That pretty much summarizes my approach to the 83 KZ1000R2 I bought ;-) . Nothing beats taking everything apart checking it and then reassembling it, downside is that it takes much more time than what you would ever imagine as you probably have no idea since it will be your first time.

from experience with the larger hondas put new clutch spring in

ebc heavy duty clutch springs are cheap the originals have been under tension for over 30 years and

once you get the motor running right it will quickly start slipping so do the springs now and save the plates

He is right in one thing though... that does seem what most Newbs tend to do... and some never finish the bike.
 
turn the handlebars upside down and backwards , a skate deck fer a seat ,post up sum instaqueer pics and call it good :)
 
if the bike has been sitting pull the rear wheel and grease the splines with moly 60 paste

clean the linkage slot on the hi/lo box and put some grease in the slot so it loosens up and it shifts

i love my 900 custom they are a awesome bike enjoy it

Looks super clean man. Great bike. As stated by those who were being helpful, you should go through it front to back and make it run like it did when new. That generation of bikes is becoming more desirable to the collector set for what that's worth (not much in my book really). That said, it would be a shame to see ya get in over your head with it. Keep it simple and ride the wheels off of it!
 
Very clean looker and only thing I can add is look over the wheel bearings ! I made the mistake of not looking them over on my FJ and got very Lucky my rear didn't lock up . When I pulled the wheel found rusty bearings blown apart and the bearing cage in a wad . I would agree and do nothing to it but get it running maybe a few bolt ons ?

Don't do stupid things like clubman bars, no fenders and pods.

Pretend you are Freddie Spencer as much as possible.
 
the effs are some of the best looking hondas ever made :-*
anybody that cuts/molests a good one beyond reason should have their hands chopped off ;D
