Brat/rat first chop

As a matter of fact, after reading up on the pma..... I’m not even sure I want to use it. I like the idea of ditching the battery but..... maybe it’s not the best route

if you are gonna run a battery... I don't see any real reason to.

Well the whole reason I was going to run the pma was to ditch the battery. Apparently the pma adds more weight to the crank, and I don’t like the way that sounds. Only reason I want to ditch the battery was for weight reduction. I’m ditching the starter for sure. The starters suck on these bikes anyway.

Now I’m thinking a light weight li-ion battery would be great for running a low voltage system with the stock charging system. I already have two good charging systems if I go that route.
The stock system actually stops charging when the battery is charged, so I won’t have to worry about a shunt system.

I do have a super badass mosfet reg/rec I could use on a pma system, but It’s heavy too. I’m definitely trying to shed as much weight as possible without compromising integrity. I know there’s always a trade off.

My thoughts on the trade off: it’s not really a “traveling” bike. I’m wanting more of a street ripper. Going with a smaller aluminum gas tank seems like a viable solution for weight shedding. I don’t have too many fender options, other than steel, at the moment. But I’m still on the hunt

What have you guys done to shed weight?

If found a guy that’s sand casting tappet covers. Here’s a shot of those, and the tank I’m thinking about. Santa clause is coming baby!

Use your stock carbs. I ran VM34's on my XS cafe. They were great, but if you have good stock carbs, start with those and get the bike running.

Then decide if you want to jump to the VM's.

MikesXS cartridge emulators are a nice add for the front suspension, but some work drilling out damper rods etc.

I think regardless of how you lower the front, the handling will be the same (unless you also lower the back). Whether you use Hugh's lowering kit or slide the forks up the tree, the geometry is the same. So fine tune things before you bother with lowering kits. Then you can decide the right setup.

I'm working on a rigid XS bobber myself, and have Hugh's 3" lowering kit, but I haven't installed it yet. I'm waiting to get the bike built, engine in, on the ground to see just where the suspension settles before deciding to do anything.

+1 for sticking with a battery. Keep the electric start too if you haven't already removed it. Plenty of strong, small batteries out there to drive the starter.

I built a rephased, 750cc, hot cam, oversized valve XS motor with no electric start. It was a bear some days.

I used a 2000 conventional R6 front end on my XS650 de-raked t o24 degrees. I didn't want the look of USD forks on this bike.
Cheers, 50gary

I’ve heard rephasing makes the bike much harder to kick start. It makes sense. I’m definitely not going to rephase this motor. I’m definitely ditching the starter for weight. I never used it on the other motor anyway. My other motor was a one kick wonder. It had awful compression, but it fired up every time even with a bent valve. Beats anything I’ve ever seen.
I’ll put a pedal kicker on it to expedite the process (hopefully) lol

Also, I’m for sure going to have to use what I’ve got to get the bike going. I don’t want it setting up all winter without running. My biggest concern with the stock carbs are the mounting. The bs 38s with the stock holders eventually vibrate or bounce loose. I do like how they perform. Very little fuss with them other than that. When this bike was running, I was riding the heck out of it tho.

Ordered parts today. I got some slightly longer rear shocks to try and level out the stance. Got a front fork brace coming from HHB. Going with the pma kit after all. I’m going to give running no battery a shot. I’m running bare bones anyway so let’s see how it works. Got some hardware and gaskets in the other day.

Once I wire everything up, I should have a runner. Then I’ll pull the motor again to sort out the frame. I’ll post some photos when everything gets here

Rolled her out in the sunshine today. Progress has been slow due to work and the holidays. I like the stance better now that I added a little length to the rear shocks. My lines are still a little uneven, but I’ll work it out with the seat. I bolted on the fork brace and mounted the carbs. The exhaust I had and the exhaust that came with this motor are both pretty shoddy so I’m going to end up changing those out.

I did work on the frame a little more. I’m trying to decide where to mount the coils and capacitor. Also need a spot for a fuse box. I may try to repurpose the stock one

Hugh makes nice stuff. Keep at it man, it'll be a cool bike.

Hey, thanks. I’m chipping away at the wiring at the moment. Hopefully I’ll be able to fire it up today.

I checked the capacitor with a meter, and it doesn’t have a charge at all. I’m wondering how to jump the bike off and charge the capacitor. A friend told me you could do it with a 9v battery ‍♂️. How would I even go about doing such a thing

No suspicion yet. I haven’t even tried to fire it up yet. I know the capacitor doesn’t have a charge though. Just trying to figure out what to do to get the bike to fire, and charge the capacitor. I’m pretty new to some of this, so I’ve never used a capacitor

Tried to kick start it today, and no luck..... I’ll try jumping it off tomorrow
