Bratstyle XS650 build

Good work so far Magnang. I'm actually liking the tank you have on now, but that's just me. What about getting some taller risers some how and putting on a drag bar? Aside from blocking the speedo of course

Check that Justified Defiance link-it's got the style you want for about $20-$30 cheaper than Biltwell.

I am starting to brat my 81 xs650 and will closely moniter your build for ideas. I changed my handlebars from clubman to a set from a friend's KZ650. I have all newly painted sheetmetal from a sportster (frt fender, chopped rr fender and tank) painted flat black and also found a aermachii headlamp bucket that will accomodate a 2.5" speedo or tach. I don't like the tail section with that big fender mount and may cut the rear section off. I see that you kept yours, what is your rear fender idea? I got 10.5" progressive rr shocks from a parts bin at work to lower the rear and will eventually powdercoat my wheels and add larger size tires. Keep the pics coming....

Cool.

I'm going to keep a rear fender for now, I have to pass a safety test before I can get this bike on the road. I will probably run a shortened rear fender to which I will bolt an aftermarket taillight assembly. I'll need turn signals as well.

I'm not going to run a front fender at all, I'll just bolt on the stocker for the safety test. Do you have a thread for your build?

More pictures to come soon! My build has slowed down considerably as I've been watching a lot of hockey lately...

Anyways, I've come across a couple of boxes of spare parts on Kijiji. Better gas tank, set of fenders, tailight from a 1973, a set of older Mikuni BS38s... And a set of slightly bent bars that I actually really like, hopefully someone here can help me identify them so I can buy a good set. I'm not sure if they are the stock XS650 standard bars from the 73 donor bike, they have a lot of rise to them, but then again that may just be relative since my bike is lower than stock and has no seat...

As well I have come up with a electrical diagram I'll be putting up tonight, I've had to do some guesswork.

Heres the electric layout I came up with... I will need all the lights to pass a safety and this bike will also see some use s a commuter hopefully. I'm ditching the reserve lighting, self cancelling signals, kill switch, kickstart switch and probably the starter motor as well. Another feature I want is to have the spark and lights on seperate fuses.

It's been forever since my last update...

But here's a few pics of the bike as she is now... Slowly nearing it's first road test.

- Electrics are all wired. Bullet signals, taillight from '73 donor bike. Long term I will get another one but this will get me safetied
- Unbent the handlebars as best as I could
- Couldn't get the TCI sparking, so I got a PAMCO kit from Mikes XS with the advance mechanism. Easy to put together, fired up first kick.
- My charging system doesn't seem to work, despite new brushes...
- Practiced paint with my spare tank, made a few mistakes... Not enough clearcoat, and some running in one spot that I couldn't quite even out when sanding. Learned some lessons though, the next job should be better

That is lookin real good man!
I still have to check out my charging/ignition system, it was giving me some trouble but the wiring was a mess. I have a lot of it all straightened out so hopefully soon I will be able to start her up.

If you have 90$ to spare you should look into a PAMCO, it's so much better than the stock setup, and takes all of 15 minutes to setup.

The charging system is known to suck on theses bikes... Worn brushes and bad connections are still the most common problem... But the rotors tend to go bad, too

I plan on getting a pamco, but mine is a '80 and has the new ignition/charging so my out of pocket is $200.
