Build bike, get license..

Hey Guys! I'm loving this board, such a great source of info. I've been snooping around and doing some research for a few weeks and just picked up a bike, a neglected '73 CB350G. She's pretty rough, it was last registered in 1983 and has spent most of its life since then sitting in a farmers field. The guy i bought off of was intending to build and had started the teardown, so I purchased it in parts.. not ideal but I think most of its there.

lets test some pictures.

Do you think those forks will clean up?
..stripped phillips screws on the cam housing, compliments of previous owner.

Hi Tomo

Welcome to "DoTheTon"... Wow you do have a project  I guess get a good manual or go here
http://www.cmsnl.com/honda-cb350g-super-sport-350-us_model1006/partslist/

This is a good web site that has the fiche files you need and it shows you the break down of each section of the bike. I use it alot when I forget how to put something back.

The frame looks decent.

Thanks
Dave

Hey Tomo I think the forks will clean up...try some 220 grit and see what happens. If that works go up to 400 grit and higher to get scratches out.

I have had heads that looked like that on my cb 350...I think I got mine out by tapping on the philiip screw driver head a lil with a hammer to get it to bite more...if not u need a extractor I believe.

Ebay is a good source for parts

Thanks Dave! bookmarked the microfiche.

The frame is decent but I'll go sandblast it and paint or powdercoat it, not sure which yet. I think I'll be getting some practice with an extractor pretty soon. The oil filter screws are even worse.

pistons are dented up, PO said the motor was siezed up a bit. found some cheap ones here if they should be replaced.

if that was my bike, i'd buy some black ABS plumbing pipe with a diameter just wider than the forks (1.5" or 2") seal one end with some plastic wrap and a hose clamp, pour in some evaporust, and insert the forks. they'll be rust free in a day or two.

evaporust is a bit expensive since you have to submerge the item in it, but its reasonable where the container fits pretty tight

Interesting stuff, I'll see how it goes first. If sanding doesn't work well, I may take the forks apart (they need to be rebuilt anyway) and put them through some electrolysis. I'm hoping they don't come out too pitted.
Shipping costs on the evaporust would may it costly. I'll check to see if its available in Canada

Hey Tomo

I would get fresh clutch's and springs and be done with it. It would suck to get your bike all together and finally take it out and the clutch goes out and your stranded some were.

I got you another link to help you. I purchased the clutch's and springs from Barnett for my 350 and I have to make sure now I have a good grip when I let the throttle rip. ;D

http://www.barnettclutches.com/products/clutch_plates_springs.aspx?type=clutches_other&clutch_make=Honda&clutch_cc=350

Big diff from the old gear to the new stuff.

I dont know what your budget is Tomo but if it was my bike I would spend the extra money and get new pistons...might as well get everything else new since you have to motor apart.

Your frame would look killa being powder coated.

Dont cut the frame or grind any welds off...I did and I kinda regret it. :'(

Ebay has alot of items for the cb350 but there are other company's that might sell better quality.

I got lucky with my bike and just had to replace the clutch and springs. ;D

its available at home hardware

just call ahead to make sure they have it in stock. you can use it over and over again until it stops working

Yeah, I wanna go for a gun metal grey powdercoat frame and flat black engine. After seeing it on goodfornothing's bike in the builds section, my mind was made up. I'm trying to keep the budget low but not cheap out and regret anything.
What I'm planning;
rebuild engine, new parts as necessary but mostly stock
stock tank, clear coated steel.
make a seat, like BCR 2 person cafe. carbon fiber. http://www.benjiescaferacer.com/seatspics.html
home made rear sets
drag bars or clip ons.
2-1 exhaust. Mac or stainless steel.

I've really been inspired by Loudbike. that thing is beautiful. http://www.dropbars.com/loudbike.html
mad props to the builder!

Thanks Dave and Duncan for the welcome, I just might start a build thread.
