Building my garage, need some ideas!!

I have been working on my garage for the past couple of weeks, 30x36'. Just brainstorming trying to get some ideas of what will make it badass!! I will post some picks when I get home.

gas heat. Insulation. Ceiling fans/vent fan. plenty of storage. and all the things basement rat said.

as the others said... climate control.

get a latex (shiny?) floor or similar... they get dirty quicker, but are easier to clean and you can be sure your work station is dust free for motor work.

tool chests... organize them from the beginning and keep them that way. if i could i would have two towers seperated by a LONG worktable for motor work/planning that has a chair.

also... bike lift in the middle.
another good idea is to have a small movable table that you can put tools on when your not using them. bad things happen when tools touch the floor (and it is my biggest peeve... the tools should never touch the floor!)

i use industrial outdoor carpet in mine, and LOVE IT! would never go back to just cement, have an old vacume for when things get too nasty

mobile work benches (with wheels), varsol tank, locker for chemicals, open rafters to hang stuff/ parts from the sealing, LOTS OF GOOD LIGHT!!!. Lots of shelves to store stuff, tv, couch, internet.

i also built a spray booth that folds into the wall for max use of space... it is nice, but lighting is CLUTCH man

Stationary air compressor with piped lines and quick connections strategically located.

Also drop down extention cords from the ceiling are great.

As for as tool chest go, well they are great and cool too have, but REALY pricey, so I found an old bus boy cart, beefed up the casters, mounted peg board to two sides and placed a small tool chest on the top for my socket sets. the rest of my tools are all displayed on the peg board on the "front" and one side. I left the others open and put a shelf in there to store other things and mounted a plug strip to it. Now all I have to do is leave my grinder and other commonly used power tools plugged in and on the shelves of the cart. Once the cart is pluged in, your ready to use anything on it. Cool part is I can roll it all around easily to be right beside whatever I am working on.

I will try to post some pics of my tool cart when I get a chance.

And like Joe just mentioned....LIGHTING! have some florecents for good lighting but make sure you have some drop lights and a wall mounted spot lights that can easily be adjusted to the direction you need them in each case. If I was to build a shop now, I would use several outdoor spotlights mounted about 7 feet high on the walls all the way around and have a switch under each one.

sorry i keep adding my 2c over and over... but peg board is great as well. we made my brothers tool box out of some old medical shelves from a clinic that shut down and put wheels on it

here are some shots of our work stations... one thing i really sugest is that anythign you attach your vice to you bolt into the wall, i have 4 lag bolts that hold my bench to the wall and it still shakes when i ahve things in the vice that i am cuttin on or bending

i dont like carpet... i used to build RC cars and used to loose tons of mini screws in my carpet xP

for a workbench... find butcher block. its the strongest stuff around, wont damage parts since its made of wood, and is sturdy enough that you can bolt ANYTHING to it.

my main bench is 15 feet long, with 6 steel posts concreted about 6 inches into the floor. there is a shelf under it (can store TONS of stuff, and keep it off the floor...) and a shelf above it. there are 4 outlets every 5 feet, and three fluorescent bulbs the whole length of it.

i love it, but its technically my dads workplace (but i get more use of it... its currently covered in shiny alloy parts :D)

if you weld... a good steel welding table is nice so that you always have a place to attach the lead too. truth is, shops should work for you... and i have honestly seen some people who cannot work with everything organized.

me, personally, if i had the time, everything would be perfectly organized, outlined on peg board, etc. just makes work faster and the total job cleaner.

All of these are awesome ideas!! I like the mobile work bench and the fold away paint booth the best. I already have plans for all of Basement rats ideas :D Climate control and insulation were in the plans from the beginning.

I have four dogs but only two would just hang with me in the old shop.

i hang a bed sheet over the front when i paint in it. works great just make sure it is a lint free sheet

At work we call this "5S" and its an old Kaizen manufacturing idea. Believe it or not this idea saves money in the long run. The idea of having everything labeled and having a place for everything and everything in its place makes work more efficient. Rather than WAISTING time looking for something. 5S allows us to know where the tool is and spend more time using the tools, instead of looking for them.

Many of the smaller job shops I have worked at shun this idea, thinking its a waste. ITS NOT. I have seen new work areas created that started with 3 hour setups, and ended with 15min setups when the 5S was close to completion (5S is never done).

I myself am putting up a new building and plan to make this my priority after I am finished moving into it.

5S is usually done in spare time, usually when I am waiting on someone else so I can do my job.

Sharperdill, I want do something like that, my last shop was the biggest mess I had ever seen, but I could always find whatever I needed and didn't have to look for anything because it was all on the floor :D

but with the new shop I plan on having a place for everything and trying to put things back when I'm done.
