Building your own lathe
Building your own mill
Gun smithing
Kilns
Furnaces
Metal working
Smithing
Brewing
Building airplanes
Steam!!!

That is all.

I've often wondered that. If you didn't have a lathe or a mill how would you go about building one?

Built is always more special, but "money" and "time" are always applied to the project at some point. It's a matter of "when" and "how much" IMO.

If I was waiting to build it all myself, I'd still be waiting for that first ride... and waiting... and waiting...

... and riding is what it's all about, IMO.

I sure do appreciate what is crafted by you peeps though! ;) :) :)

Oh and using a chisel and hack saw blade is cheating. Gotta make those too! 8)

One of the first projects in machinist training is to make your own chisel from tool steel. From there you can make hand files and all sorts of other tools necessary/useful for making things from metal.

Well, a mill is the same basic idea as a lathe with another axis. I have seen pictures of lathes with cutters in colets and work pieces clamped to a compound rest.

I have seen this expression used a lot lately since I have been around the custom scene. I am an auto tech. And plenty good with a wrench! But am no machinist, does that make my bike junk? Because I use aftermarket parts? Form follows function is what I was always taught. If it can tear up asphault, then what good is it?

Does it make your bike junk? Not really. Its just another way of saying I'm so vastly superior to you that I am amazed I"m even speaking to you. : - )

Agreed. Riding's more important than building, to me. If building holds you up from riding, there's nothing wrong with buying. If not, cool.

Right on! Lol is anybody on this forum into vintage cafe's? Now that I have left the cruiser pack an am in deep with the history behind cafe's I was thinking a restore sometime down the road.

Sarcasm now that you called me out on it! Was a dumb question. Completely new to forums and cafe scene.

Yup. Being that this is a cafe forum, there are a few here who kinda like 'em. ;)

^^^^^^

I would give my left nut to never hear the word 'scene' after 'cafe' ever again.
