Does anyone know where to get solidworks for cheap and still have it work for CAM stuff and I am not talking about the student version?

Go to emachineshop.com and download their free software. You can use it free and draw up all the stuff you need, using it to print full scale drawing and test shapes for custom pieces. When you want to save a file to take it to a CNC shop to have it Lasercut, "Export" the file to a jump drive. It'll be saved as a .DXF file format that any computer driven plasma or laser or water jet can use. The operator just needs to remove the 3 dimensional drawings and save the 2D scale drawing. Easy peazy, I do it all the time and saves me a tonne of money on set up and drawing time. Shhh don't tell no one though 8)

What are you looking to have drawn up? I run AutoCAD Mechanical and Inventor at work. If you need something drawn up let me know and I will try to help ya out.

Well its not so much I need something specific. I really need something I can play around with different designs and still use to machine a part with. Right now I am considering getting google sketchup just because its only $500 and I think it would do everything I need. But still 500 seems like a lot for just a couple parts. And I am trained through OSU on solidworks so I know how awesome that program is. I just don't know where to buy that at less than msrp.

Have you looked at DraftSight? http://www.3ds.com/products/draftsight/overview/

I know next to nothing about CAD so it might not be what you're looking for. But I tried it out today and it seemed pretty awesome. Extra kudos for the linux version (which is why I used it).

EDIT: Did I mention it's FREE?
