Café Racer Project CB500 1977

Um.. most of those can be cut. Would've been nice if you numbered the images. First image, the upper one is an engine mount. The ones along the horizontal seat rail are for the folding seat. The square bits in the triangle were for the side covers. The bits at the bottom rear are your brake light switch -- don't cut these. And no you shouldn't just remove parts of your steering neck/ bump stop.

The bits under the rear frame are for your center stand. Some people find it useful for storage/ working on things. I cut mine off and use a swinger stand instead.

Might want to do a bit of research before you go into just cutting things. Don't think insurance covers suicides..

I hope this doesn't offend you, but it seems to me that you're putting the cart before the horse and haven't given your build enough thought yet. Personally I think you should have planned out what you were going to do with the bike before you took it apart. As it is now you don't even know what needs, or can be cut off your bike frame. Starting a build this way is going to lead to a destroyed frame and an unfinished project. I think you should assemble your bike and start over before cutting anything based on suggestions from random people on the interweb.
Where are you planning on mounting your electronics, if you're putting them under the seat do you know how big your electronics tray can be without hitting the engine or air filters?
Where's your battery going to be mounted?
How are you going to mount your rear sets? Where will the mounts go? Will they clear the exhaust and swing arm? Will the kick starter clear them?
Are you going to run pods? Where will the mounts for the carbs go, or will they just be held on with the rubber manifolds?
What exhaust are you planning on using? How will it mount to the frame?

If you haven't figured out all this before cutting you'll end up cutting off tabs and mount you may need, only to end up welding on new ones in the same place.

Hey Guys thanks for the feedback. and no it doesn't offend me i only want to hear your opinions and thoughts ;)
i already planned and drawed how i will make my electronic tray and where to put my battery on.

about the tabs i don't will cut alot off only the simple ones that i don't need for the seat etc...

sooooo i already made alot of research and now i can start on my trays for the electronic stuff^^

So Guys i finally started to put my Engine to Pieces to look which parts i need to order ;)
Next Pictures will be of the finished Engine.
And i still need to tackle my Frame so i can put everything back together ;)

Looking sweet mate 8) keep it up ya gonna have a real cool ride this summer look forward to more updates n pics :p

I like the colour scheme going on.

Did you remove the bushings from the swingarm before powdercoat?

I also see the steering stem has been covered in powder. Surely this will need to be stripped off so your bearings will fit?

thanks guys!

yeah i still need to remove the bushing from the swingarm and a little bit from the steering column probably.
but yeah didnt tought about it before so now i willl have to do it when i build it together.
thats what we call learning by doing right? :D

also my mechanic told me that probably he can found me a racing engine to be put in meanly a stroked one (probably 601ccm or more).
if that doesnt happen i will stroke it anyway when i rebuild the whole engine.

now we have to look with the papers that i get from when i bought it. if we need to make new papers i can have a "typenschein X", which means i can do everything with the cafe racer and i dont have to show everything to the guys that test it every year.

and i am still unsure what for tyres i want.

so yeah iam thinking now about a tarrozzi rear set and a couple of other things. electronicwise it will be really simple with only the necessary stuff ;)

So small but steady progress.
finished lacing my wheels and wanted to look what my bars look like with the original honda levers.
looks nice but probably will switch to new ones. i already have m-buttonminis from motogadget for all my buttons.
also started to make a seatholder out from cardboard.

did you know a clutch- and handbrake- lever that looks a little nicer? like smaller?

still like the brakefluidreservoir on the old instruments 8)

thanks.

nice work but the rear tire hits that crossbar you welded in
you skipped the most important step checking the clearance at full travel

There we go!

Some progress was made by putting out the old swingarm bushings and putting the new ones in.
i also finished my front forks with new seals and new fork oil in them.
also pushed the old steering bearings out and new ones in. next saturday i will try to put some wheels on it.
i also thought about new rear shocks. what did you preferer brandwise? hagon? ikon?

and about the clearance with the rear wheel. i think it will fit ;) otherwise chopchop.

also three pictures that you see i really made progress… and yeah i had to scratch some powdercoat from the sterring thingy that the bearing fitted ;)

thanks for watching ;D

Wow, unique color scheme. Looking forward to seeing it come together!

I would get those shocks and check clearance on the frame before re-making your seat as it could potentially affect the seat design. Just a thought.

So again progress was made ;D

had this week free to work some on the bike.

Started truing the Wheels but now i know why people do it as a business, its fucking science!
Started with the front wheel but after 2 Days centering it, it still wasnt 100 percent perfect.

so yeah i also started to make the rear wheel but then after i trued it i said lets stop with this stuff and move on to some funnier things ;)

started to put together my tripletree, all new bearings alot of grease etc, etc.
also mocked up my light to see how it will look like plusminus. forks where also put on with everything new like oil, dust stoppers, seals, etc.

in the progress of mounting the tripletree i accidently scratched some powdercoat away. damn how i hate it if stuff like that happens. will have to touchup some spots around the bike;) also dont powdercoat your spokes, it was a nightmare to put them in ;D

i thought that this week it will be finally on his own wheels but yeah stuff that gets between like always^^
try to put more time in this bloody thing on the next weekend 8)

here are a couple of bad pictures for now for you to enjoy.

also made a decision that i will try to use some longer shocks in the rear to deal with my clearance issue that i probably will have with the rear wheel and the frame ;)

stay tuned…deadline is still summer we will see what happens ::)

Small Update.

Today i had some time to start making my seatpan thingy to hide the battery etc.
at the end it will have four screws that hold it to the frame.

I also scored the deal of my life, when i found the stroker kit i was after in germany for 250 dollar!
It should arrive on monday then i can lay the whole engine out and see what parts are missing and which ones i will need ;)
after that the motor gets build that the stroker kit works. it will be 610ccm when i am finished with it ;)
I hope progress will be more from now on.

Short Question about a seat. for now i think i will only make a seat and afterwards make a caferacer pan out of epoxy.
so if i buy foam and leather to do it what did you guys take to mount the foam an the leather under the pan? wood or plastic stuff?
or should i make holes that goes tru the metal pan?

Thanks for feedback 8)

[/b]

You're having issues with powder coating that you shouldn't. I highly recommend you find a coater that knows what he is doing. powder should not "scratch away" if the part is prepped properly. I have coated literally 1000's of spokes and never had a fitment issue with them coated. If you're having issues installing coated spokes it's because the coating was applied too thick.

So a Couple of Parts arrived that i needed.
new clutch lever and brake lever, longer shocks for the rear to have more space for the rear wheel to travel.
for now some biltwell grips that i will cut to fit some motogadget blinkers in them ;)

by the way, the engine is at the mechatronik guy to press the stuff in and get it ready for the new cylinders.
i should have the engine back in two weeks ;)

thanks for reading.
