All the lathe experts out there, this any good?
Nothing wrong with an early Atlas. That's pre-Chinese. Comes with lots of tooling too.

Be a decent hobby machine. Wouldn't expect too much out of it though. I've a little bench top, pretty much use it for running scotch brite down linkage rods.

$1,000- $1,500 and some time searching can find you a good 9"

I paid $700 for my Logan 200 with a 10" swing. I looked for about 2 years before I found that deal. They're out there, just might have to be really patient.

I paid $800 for my 14" Lodge. Spent a week cleaning, and $50 on paint, and she was good as new.

That's nice. Bigger ones tend go cheaper though. Most guys don't have the space for them.

thats the same lathe i have sold as a craftsman ,minus quick change gearbox for threading
like jrod says its fine for hobby or small stuff .you can't be in any hurry with it and notice it has square ways a good lathe has a peaked way more like a pyramid shape
the weight of the carrige on a peaked way is what keeps it tracking straight because it is settled down on the way and cannot shift sideways
the biggest killer of the lathes accuracy is neglect in clean and lubed ways
with the square ways you have to keep a gib adjusted so it tracks
if the square wayed lathe hase been beat on too much and way lube neglected, it will never turn a true even diameter for long length
when looking at a used lathe look for more wear up near the chuck in the ways you will be able to see it and feel it

That fan you have hanging in the corner probably doesn't move all that much air but I suppose if you keep it aimed toward your face it'll help keep you a little cooler. ;D

Lol. My grandfather was big into boats, Mercury dealer, service center, and so on, which trickled down to my old man collecting antique outboards. That one, is a first year Johnson.

Love it. Surprised it's still for sale for such a bargain. It even has electrical tape over its galvanized pail headlight. That's craftsmanship.
