Hey, real question. This ad claims "matching numbers" but it also has a custom one-off frame. What numbers are they talking about? Why would anybody care about matching numbers on a bike that is as far from stock as it can be? What am I missing?

You pretty much summed it up yerself here... "Why would anybody care"
Does matching numbers matter on anything other than an original bike or restoration?

A good chance if the motor/frame #'s "don't" match on and old bike the donor was likely much lower hours, people don't swap motors for bad or worse condition.

For me, I don't give a rats ass unless it's new... ish then I don't want to know anyone was in the motor other than to adj valves and no not ever no fucking way would I buy a bike that was big bored and the pipes rashed from wheelies hhhaaahhh

Since when did Honda ever match numbers?

Well depends... My K2 750 or 1972 has matching #'s with the motor beginning with and "E" not all do though at some point they went haywire and figured it was too much hassle to stamp motors on the line.

Did they ever stamp engine numbers on the CB750's on the line? My 1969 has frame and engine numbers that are not close with the engine being #1644. The engines and frames were made in different factories and then mated on the line. I believe it to be extremely rare to have a matching numbers 750. I'd like to see Tuna's matching numbers as I have never seen one before. Didn't all of the motors start with an E, which designates it as and Engine number?

And what are you trying to show me in that chart? It just shows which frame number and engine numbers they started with each year. Doesn't mean they put them together on the line. A I mentioned before, matching numbers is extremely rare, though I doubt they raise the value of the bike because they match. It's not like a matching numbers original 67 427 Corvette.

Now I am curious... after a short search it seems this has been hashed and the #'s for K2 are the most controversial. However it does seem you and Eric are correct in that the #'s don't match or after the K0 at least...

My shins are both throbbing, so I guess I'm headed home for luch :-\

Not even on the K0's. As I mentioned i have a 69 sandcast, the engine is #1644 and the frame is #1565
