Cafe seat and framerail relationship...?

Hi guys-

What is the standard when it comes to a cafe seat being mounted on the frame rails? Not how to mount, that's been covered. What I mean is how much should the seat overhang onto the framerails? Would there be a 1/4in. of framerail showing, more or less? Should the seat sit "on top" of the frame rail? Thanks.

Now, if only I can find a seat for a 350F...

Its your bike. Make it look however you want. The only "right" way is your way.

As far as where to find a seat, check out RocCity and Dime City Cycles. Both members here and top notch guys.

Completely unrelated, but I keep clicking on Von's avatar trying to enlarge it. :(

related to Fix's unrelated comment: you dont want to - it's VonYinzer wearing a wig.

My seat sits pretty much flush to the rails and is mounted directly to the frame. No rules to mounting a seat imo, as long as it's secure, simple to take off and doesn't hurt your ass too much.

There's no formula for what people do with their bikes, it's all up to you. For inspiration, check out the past Bike of the Month winners here on the DTT boards. You can also check out the innumerable motorcycle blogs: BikeExif, PipeBurn, BubbleVisor to name a few.

i have a 400f and am concerned with this as well. I plan on making my seat with a little extra overhang for the rails in case i want to mount it higher. for instance on some aluminum stock to "raise the frame height". I am only 6' tall but am worried about riding position when sitting even lower than on that fat stock seat. these bikes were made by the japs (god bless them) so i think they sized them for themselves. lol.

If you want your seat and frame to have a long and lasting relationship, the real question is how high should it be. That and what's available tend to dictate where it ends up vertically.

On a CB160 for example the frame is so small I either mount the seat on top or on a small subframe and the whole frame tube is showing.

On a large bike like say a GT750 Suzuki, it's already so high that I want the seat to go as low as possible and that covers all of the frame rails. Both look right because the overall proportions are correct.

For a 350F measure the seat to footpeg height and then measure the frame where the seat will sit and head on over to Airtech streamlining where they have a nice collection of seats with all the measurements. It's like a dating site where you search for deep compatibility and that way you get a perfect match.
