I like old country music. Loretta Lynn, Earnest Tubb, Jim Reeves, Hank Williams, Patsy Cline, Tammy Wynette, and others. I spent a bunch of time going through my old country this weekend, and fell in love with it again. This was from time when you literally promoted yourself by getting in a car, living on bologna, and drove to each station to get them to play your record. Not really Rocker material, but I just can't help it. Anything after 1975...not so much.

Anybody else, or have I just made a let something out and become "that guy"?? :D

There are worse ways to die than listening to country music, but not many.

That said, I'll go for some Rockabilly stuff and if you don't love Johnny Cash there's just something wrong with you. :p

I hate to admit it, but I listen to the older stuff too. Back when county was real music. Not all about pick up trucks and crazy ex's.

As long as it makes you happy that's all that matters. I'm very familiar w/ most of those artists; most are not really my taste, but I can truly appreciate their dedication, drive and love for their craft. There certainly wasn't any reliance on reverb, overdubing, and electronics, just their raw talent.

There was a thread going around here w/ people naming their favorite bands... I didn't bother to chime in because I have never heard of most of them! Didn't think I'd be able to contribute much by saying that mine were The Beatles, ELO, The Who, etc. Play it often and loud and just enjoy yourself!

Nice avatar Mike! LOL... yeah i love the old stuff, but I also like a few of the new artists... well not that new, Tim, Garth, MG, B&D, even a little Darius Rucker... I think he really found his place in Country... Then again the only country station round here only plays hits so I am forced to listen to it when I don't have AT&T signal (thank God for the Pandora app!!!)

I cant stand new country. Its soo repetitive...and the pop/dance influence is just plain ignorant.

@T7
Old Country jives really well with rock-a-billy. Consider yourself in the right place.
A fan of Hank, Bo-c-phus, and Hank the third (assjack) myself.

it's actually 100% rocker related. vintage country like lefty frizell,bob will's and some you have listed had a heavy influence on some of the most revered band's in rocker history like crazy cavan,sandy ford and the flying saucers etc.

cheers

Country is awful stuff. The female artists are ok but the guys sound like they are still stuck in puberty.

Southern Culture On The Skids is as "country" as I'll go even though it's known a hick-rock. Great band.

Well, glad to know I am not alone anyway! I agree that the pop, electric influence has really killed the "front porch" creativity of good old gold. I guess there are a few "throwback" bands that do an alright job, but I think the era has passed. Thoug I gotta side with Jug, I lean more toward the female artists as well. There is nothing cooler than going into some old guy's garage where he is tinkering, and he has a Patsy record on.

I think Toby Keith is the last real "new style" male country singer i like..hes got that raw, bad assness about him. Same thing that a lot of old singers brought to the table.

Amen, brother! (and you'd have to be pretty soulless not to love some Patsy Cline too)

Man I'm with you all the way. I love to rock out, but i'm all about the early country. Hank Snow, Dave Dudley, etc. I'm 40 years old, but when I was 7, Johnny Cash came to the Clay County Fair (where I live) and my folks took me. Also got to see Waylon in the twin cities and David Allen Coe in St. Cloud. LOve the old stuff but don't like the pop top 40 new stuff. Thanks for starting this thread.

All old country (and I mean old, 30s, 40s, 50s...) is a direct decendent of Rockabilly. If you like Rockabilly, theres a good chance that you would enjoy some real classic country and bluegrass. Most modern country (especially Toby Keith... haha) sucks. Its mass produced garbage. Just made to sell records. Very little "soul" to any of it. That said though, there are some real badasses keeping the flame alive. Folks like;

Wayne "the Train" Hancock:
Wayne "The Train" Hancock "Viper of Melody" EPK

Dwight Yokam (whos been doing his thing for years):
GUITARS AND CADILLACS

Chris Issak:
Chris Isaak Blue Hotel 1987 [Official Video]

Thats just a few...

LOL!!! Your title of the thread is so misleading, I thought you were going to talk an extensive porn collection or something of that nature, never would I thought it had to do with country music. All BS aside, I am no country music fan, but I do have a story of a song that I just could not get out of my head. Back in college I was taking a class in economics relates to sports and entertainment, the professor invited a guess, she was a dance choreographer and she was hired by a big record company to produce a dance to compete against the famous acky breaky heart in-line foot work. So she was to invent a dance for Tim McGrawl, I believe this was in the early 90's, Tim McGrawl was an unknow artist back then, anyway the song and dance never became famous, but here it is:

Tim McGraw - Indian Outlaw

Don't blame me if you cannot get the song out of your head, you have been warned!!!

Real country and honky tonk isn't P.C. enough for todays society... Because the lyrical content tends to address "real" problems, and "real" pain, and dare I say, real love.

People say that the american public is being "de-sensatized". I beg to differ, anything real is covered in fictional/virtual bullshit. Time to man up people, walk over and sock that ass-hole neighbor in the face John Wayne style.
