as i was attempting to adjust the cam chain tension on my 1980 cb750 custom i managed to destroy the threads on the front adjusting bolt near the headers. the nearest machine shop is about 4 miles. can i just have them re tap the threads on the bolt hole and put in a new bolt? would i cause any major damage by riding the bike to the machine shop with no bolt in the cam tensioner hole?

i had the engine idling as i was doing this as it says in the factory service manual. would that of cause any damage to the engine?

Front adjuster tensions the 'short' chain.
Bolt presses on tensioner rod to lock it in place.
You'll need someone who has a clue about early 80's CB 750/900 Honda's or they will probably screw it up
Be very careful when you adjust rear tensioner (nuts under carbs)
If you break that one, cam timing will probably 'jump' and you'll bend at least 4 valves
I always found it better to adjust before doing tappet adjustment with cam cover off
