Howdy, I am in the market to get a new camera, can someone recommend an entry level camera? Budget up $600

Thanks

All depends on what your intensions are.. If you want to get into DSLR's.. then agreed.. and cannon rebel XTI is a decent entry camera.. have mine for three years and still takes some great pic's.. if your looking for a fun point'n shoot camera.. the Olympus Stylus Tough-6020 is a really great camera... fits in your pocket.. waterproof.. freeze proof.. shock proof, 720p HD video and 14meg photo files.. super fun camera.. take mine every where we go.. kids have fun with it in the water... and take it snowboarding lots too.

get a film camera , so many nice cameras and accessories on ebay for dirt cheap now , i love my film cameras , i love cannon dslr too though , film for fun , digital for work camera

Here's my thoughts, although I must say I haven't done any 'real' photography for seveal years
I used film camera with interchangeable lenses for long time as there wasn't anything else available (I even won a photography competition )
What you intend to do may determine type of camera.
'General' photography, pretty much anything works although an SLR may be too bulky for some situations (I usually used 'disposable' camera's for 'parties' ;D)
You will probably expect things some camera's may not be capable of, make sure it has Macro capabilities (or 'close up'/close up capability lenses) plus, telephoto lens/capability as you may want to take pics of your projects/parts then go to race track
'Spot' or 'area' metering for exposure can be handy with back-light/high contrast pictures, 'auto' just doesn't work in all situations (which is fine if you can work around 'problem')

I bought a D40 about 3 years ago and it has held up superbly and it takes stunning pictures, it was sub $500 with a kit. If I had had the coin I would have done a D40x, but I am extremely happy with my purchase. I take it to the beach, out on the kayaks, on the bike...everywhere. Used now they are in the 350ish area, also the lenses are fairly inexpensive. I have always had Nikon everything, scopes for my guns, point-and-shoot cameras, and film cameras, and now dslr's...I will continue to purchase their products. Good luck with your search!

if you want a camera that just does everything I'd look at a canon g9 or an olympus pen. both cameras are fully manual or automatic. the pen shoots hd video and both are considered pro point and shoots.

I've got a Fujica STX-1 SLR (c. 1983) and a Fujifilm Finepix J10 8.2MP digital. The SLR is awesome for more elaborate shots or 'artsy' stuff, but the digital only cost $160 on sale and takes awesome pictures...so gets used for most things over the SLR.

I'd definitely recommend the J10 if you can still find one, although my mate has one of those indestructible Canons (you know, can go undrwater, survive a 6ft drop onto concrete etc etc) and thats pretty awsome as well if you need something for all situations.

EDIT: Text revision

I shoot Nikon (D5000). There are some deals to be had for older D40 and D60 models and they are great cameras with some awesome cheap lenses available.

I've also heard really good things about the new Canon S90 point and shoot. It has a very fast f2 lens which is very unusual for a point and shoot and allows for great shots in low light without a flash. I'm hoping to pick one up at some point.

Mine crapped out on me a few months ago and bike parts trump camera.

Im looking for small, point and shoot, double A batteries, SD memory card that saves pictures in a standard universal readable format capable of taking video and durable enough to mount to my bike for some video.

Whats out there?

I have decided to go with a Canon T1i, I decided between the Nikon D90, but I chose the T1i because it records video in HD at 1080 and the D90 only records at 720. Also the cost is significantly less then the D90, Costco has the T1i for $849. It's a bundle package, it's not on Costco website, but on Walmarts, tell me what you think about it, it's on back order until the end of the week:
