Can I lace these rims to my hubs?

Hello, check out my build thread here: http://www.dotheton.com/forum/index.php?topic=24444.0. I asked this question there too, but thought maybe it would get more attention here.

Hopefully someone can help, If I bought two of the rims below, then gave details to Buchanan's Spokes and got some spokes, do you think I will be able to lace them up to my hubs (1984 XL350R)?

I've never built a wheel before but with the internet at my finger tips I'll give almost anything a go.

Cheers for any advice.

If you have 36 hole hubs, it wont be a problem.
Did you get the WM2? (1.85"x19")

Hi Crazypj, I haven't bought any rims yet. I'm still trying to understand it all, two local wheel builders have told me that I can't just order any 36 hole rims because they might not work.

Cheers for your input.

The holes are drilled at diferent angles for different hub diameters.
I haven't had any problems filing the holes to a different angle though and either using shaped washers or oversize spoke nipples
You probably want to take a tape measure to some MX hubs and see how much difference there is to you XL hubs.
May be easier to convert to disc front brake and use MX hubs ( early/mid 90's CR125/250 etc)

Call Buchanan's, tell them the rims you have (lie - tell them you already have them) and the hubs you have and ask if they can make you some spokes. If they say yes, then you're golden.

If I understand your question correctly you are asking how difficult it is to lace and true a wheel, not if some specific hub can be laced to some specific rim - is that correct?

As for getting the right parts, its easy enough. Call Buchanan's and tell them what hub you have, there is no reason to lie to them about anything - and ask them to recommend a rim that they can provide spokes for. They sell several different rims and they'd be happy to drill one to the proper angles to match the hub you plan to use on your bike.

As for the difficulty, its not at all hard to do. Lacing is basically a matter of being able to count to 4 and there are plenty of web sites that have good explanations and pictures of wheels being laced. Truing isn't difficult either, but you will have to concoct some sort of stand to hold the wheel while it spins and it is best to do it with a dial indicator than to rely on some sort of home-made measuring scheme. Basically you true it to make it round first and then you take the side to side wobble out of it. You'll also need a spoke wrench, but they are dirt cheap. So if the question is, "can I do it" I say yes you can.

Thanks for the feedback. I did mean to ask if I could use those specific rims. I'll call Buchanan's this week and see if I can get some advice.

My bike is a 1984, so it has a disc front already - and the hubs are similar in size to the ones on my crf250x. But I'm going for 19" front and rear, so lacing a rear to my front hub.

My next question was going to be how, so I appreciate the input on that too. I'm keen to give lacing a go, I haven't paid for any help on my project yet. I probably haven't saved any money, but I've got lots of tools and a bit of knowledge - way better I reckon :)

Thanks again
Julian

Not sure how pertinent this is, but can you get a front/rear matched tyre in 19"? Just something to consider (if you haven't already?)

cheers
