Can I put my batteries under the tank and not catch fire?

That's pretty much the question. I have a 1984 CB125s, the first year with the 12V charging system. I'm using a non-stock tank and there is plenty of room underneath to mount the batteries (2 6V batteries in series). The are AGM batteries. I have no idea how hot they get, and the regulator/rectifier is from the 80's as well so they shouldn't fry, but I really have no idea how hot a motorcycle battery gets.

sometimes batteries get hot if there are electrical problems or if they are being used a lot, but you do see motorcycles with the coils under the tank.

I don't see why not, it would take a lot of heat to ignite the fuel in the tank. Just be absolutely certain the positive post is covered and not contacting any part of the frame or tank.

Thanks for the replies. I should be safe unless something goes wrong. But I had the bike running in good shape before I tore it down for modifications and the system seemed sound. So I don't anticipate any problems.

DrJ, that is a good point on covering the (+) ends. I don't want to risk sparks that close to the fuel source.
