Can the Rear brake arm go either direction?

I'm working on installing my rearsets on my 73 cb450 and i was wondering if the rear brake arm can work if pulled forward or pushing back.

Yep they as long as its expanding the drum brakes it will work, I haven't twisted a wrench on a 450 yet but I assume it's like the rest of the hondas I've worked on.

a quick way to test it would be put the bike on its center stand, flip the brake arm upside down and spin the wheel and pull it to see if it stops the wheel.

One thing to keep in mind though... with a "pulling" style you're likely to have less headaches. A "push" style requires everything be straight and true. A little kink in the push rod (especially if you stick with the stock rod, just cut down a bit) will, over time, develop into a nice bend that will affect your braking. Circular rods do not deal well with lateral forces. Switch out to something like an I-beam configuration if that's an option.

Make it a pull style, so much easier and you don't have to worry about it bending or locking up at the apex of the pivot.

thanks for the insight.

how have you guys connected your brake to rearsets? (particularly cb450 or similar bikes)

My rearsets already had a pivot arm on the backside, I just bolted it right up to the stock brake arm.

here is how i did it on my 450. I used cbr600f3 rearsets, I added an arm to the brake lever and made a bent stainless rod to connect. If you look through the window on the rear set you can see the linkage partially

Best way to do it is same as Dime City did on 'Brass Cafe' and I've done on 360
Although you can get brake working in either direction, it works most efficiently as the manufacturer supplied it (for best feel/modulation)
Flipping the operating arm over on the cam isn't really the best thing to do
The 'leading' shoe gets more leverage and the 'trailing' shoe gets less leverage, brake become less efficient and also more difficult to control (easy to lock up but only one shoe is doing the majority of the work)
Just took a pic of mine, link is removed as I'm making a new one.
Welded a piece onto original brake pedal mount after cutting off front section then made a new brake lever from 5/16" plate
