Cans & Fins... How Hot Do They Get?

This is a rattle can question...

I've got the high temperature paint for my exhaust tubes, but was wondering: How hot do the cooling fins around the engine cylinders and the actual mufflers get? Rather than paining these flat black, ala BBQ paint, would Duplicolor 500 degree engine paint be sufficient? And if not Duplicolor, what do you guys suggest?

Engine fins should be OK with 500 deg paint. Not sure about mufflers (depending on how close they are to the headers), but they will probably be OK.

VHT is good stuff.

I used Duplicolor engine paint, the second gasoline touches it, it will peel right off. Got to do it again now

It's crap.

I used to paint the cylinder and head but now I get them bead blasted and leave them bare. Much better for cooling.

Really? It appears the factory painted them. What's the dif?

Factory painted them probably to prevent oxidation. Bare fins are always best for cooling.

mag it has to final cure, you need to bring it up to operation temp to final cure the paint, if you used 1200 paint that is just flat out to high temp of a paint for the motor, it will not see the cure temp it needs to prevent checmical issues. if you get 500 and run the bike for a few hours, then let it cool it will be fine, i have dropped a whole cup of gas on my motor.. ya ya ya i knwo stupid, but my paint looks like i painted it yesterday! same thing for all high them powders as well

hows that work out with dirt cleaning oxidation etc?

Should work out fine. Use the same care you would for any other bare-metal part and ensure you give it a wash down with (non-soapy!) water every now and then. To help prevent oxidation you could use a fine spray of lubricant such as WD40 or similar.

By the by, I remember my Suzuki GS850's technical manual stating that the cooling fins operating temperature was around 115'C. Call it 250'F and you're in business.

Cheers - boingk
