Carb help - Carb Sync Tool in Toronto?

Ben

Been Around the Block
Hoping someone in the west end might take pitty and help me sync my newly rebuilt/installed carbs by either letting me borrow the tool or show'n me how its done.

Bike is near Bloor & 427 fwiw, its a 500 four.

I have it running and it starts without issue, just once its warmed it still seems to bog @ 0 to 1/4 throttle. it aint snappy. Lean maybe?

Any tips appreciated.

Ben

I have (I'm 99% sure) the tool (vacuum gauges for 4 cylinder bike). I loaned it out once before - need to check my toolbox.

Noel is a genius at syncing carbs - I'm sure he'll be happy to help ;)

Are all the needles/jets stock sizes? If idle isn't racing / sticking etc. it may not be a sync issue. The CB500 (I've owned a couple) isn't a super snappy bike at the bottom end. Can you kill the engine if you twist the throttle too fast?

Tom,

Yes it idles really well, dosent stick, I was surprised. Once its a little warmed up and off choke it will start instantly too.

I replaced everything with stock sizes and returned them to the original setting or what the shop manual described.

yoru right, if I twist too fast I can kill it. A friend suggested this might be a lean issue but offer'd no advice on how to correct it.

Also, it may be relevant. I do not have the airbox on it at the moment, pain in the ass to get on and I wasnt sure if I would be taking the carbs off again. Should I reinstall and try it with the airbox?

I have no experience with this bike in particular but any bike without airbox/filters will be running lean.

I've heard that even pulling socks over the inlets will help a bit if you really don't want to put the airbox on and are planning on getting pods, but if you're planning on keeping that airbox you should put it in before you waste any time trying to tune.

Make your own manometer:

http://www.powerchutes.com/manometer.asp

And yes - it only has 2 tubes, so you balance 1 and 2, then 3 and 4, then 2 and 3 to balance the carb pairs.

2nd best tool in my garage (after the syringe brake bleeder ;D)

spent an hour getting the airbox back. bitch to do. could do it again quicker next time i think.

it runs a hell of a lot better with the airbox installed. plus i cant hear the cam chain as much now, which is really good.

Will keep messing with it and I would like to sync the carbs so will read up on it.

thanks for the input
