Hey guys I need to give my carb a thorough cleaning and I've read a lot about people having success boiling it in lemon juice but can someone tell me exactly how this process should be done or direct me to a post that explains it before I try it.

Also should I take out the jets and clean them separate if so how should I clean them? or do i just leave them in? Any info will help. Thanks

G'day matey,

I did mine in 25% lemon juice an the rest water.

Boiled them for about ten mins. Then gave them a petrol bath using a stuff toothbrush. I'll upload some pics of the results.

I did polish them with autosol and a scour pad afterwards.

Take out jets, slides, floats etc.

Pinesol works great too. Not the lemon stuff. Plain pinesol.

Just make a homemade soda blaster and go to town.
I did the lemon juice thing, and it works, but leaves a shitty looking residue, REEKS, and takes forever.
Soda blaster did the job in 15 minutes

I used an old coffee can on the grill. That way the wifey won't complain about the fumes.
Spray with carb cleaner and a toothbrush to remove as much crap as you can first.
One cup of bottled lemon juice.
One carb completely disassembled, pull your jets, put them and all the other metal bits in the can
Top off with DISTILLED water to cover the carb body an inch or two.
I boiled it on the grill about 20-30 minutes.
Then followed with more spray carb cleaner and a toothbrush and a compressed air blow gun.
I have seen then turn dark if boiled too long but it comes pretty clean in the last spray carb cleaning.

Here is a pic with 2 before and 2 after...

Hey thanks for the help. your guys' stuff came out looking nice I think I misunderstood the lemon juice method though. i'm really not concerned with the way the carb looks because its on a rotary valve bike and it gets covered up. I was looking at this thinking it would be a quick fix, boil the whole thing when it's intact and all the grime is gone and the jets are unclouged.

I think i may try it though I cleaned my carb with gas and a toothbrush before I installed it the first time and it seems like all the grime came right back or never really left at all.

How's the inside of your tank?
Do you have a filter on it?
What is the carb?
At a MINIMUM... I'd pick up some spray carb cleaner at the auto parts store and pull off the float bowl. Use your brush and carb cleaner to get as much varnish off you can, then spray in EVERY hole you can get to.

hahahahahhahahahahahahahahah'

I took my brother in laws drit bike carb, took it down to pieces, stuck it in a pan, dumped a pint of lemon juice on it, boiled it for a while. probably the cleanest carb I have ever seen. ;D

I kept finding pockets of smell around the house all evening though :(

The inside of my tank has some rust but it wasn't as bad as I expected for its age. I cleaned it out as best I could by putting a handful of small nuts and bolts in it and shaking it with a little fuel then rinsing several times. Also I have been running an inline fuel filter. But the grime on my carb just came back after I cleaned it with gas It wasn't ever even put on the bike. But I picked up a can of carb cleaner and a small screw driver to get to the jets today so This should take care of it.

Pinsole soak works well
Simple green also works but turns the carb a darker color

I soda blast and then wash them throughly in clean water

I took my carb completely apart and cleaned everything up really nice with carb cleaner. I made sure I could see through the jets and that they werent blocked but my bike still only runs with the choke open. I played around with the air screw and idle adjustment and have gotten it to where it wants to run with choke closed but still everytime I open the throttle it dies.

This is a rotary valve bike and the only way to adjust the carb is with the air filter off which doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. I also put the inline fuel filter back in before I ran it with the freshly cleaned carb so I dont think the jets got blocked again.

Also its been running with no silencer. There is also a small leak at the exhaust gasket coming right out from the cylinder. I'm making an effort to fix this immediately with new mounting studs and a new gasket but by reading all this does anyone have an idea of whats going on and why it wont run with open throttle?
