the tl was just too painful on long aggressive rides.

i am itching to get back and want to do a cafe with the cb. however, the 400 auto does not appeal to my definition of a cafe bike. i will get rid of the 400 auto for sure, but cannot figure out what to replace it with. i would love a parallel twin. the only options i have seen are scabbing in a kawi 500r, 650r or something like a yamaha trx.

ANYONE OUT THERE GOT SUGGESTIONS??

swivel, i guess i wasnt too clear. too early and not enough coffee. i want to keep the cb400 rolling chassis and replace the 400 auto motor. i have got to learn to be more specific.

cool. not too concerned about being a road racer. using this as a learning tool. i have an 82 katana roller that i may turn into a more speedier option later. i just want to ride again and the typical sportbike is just too much for my arm.

It's a shame you don't want to keep the Hondamatic... They are much better than people think. I believe there are a couple on this forum.

The CB/CM400-450 used the motor as part of the frame so your easiest route would be to drop in a motor from that family. I think all the different models use the same mounting points except maybe for the trellis frame model they put out in 87 (I think) for a year or two.

In any case you're only going to get about 40hp and five or six gears. The 450's do have a perceptively beefier mid-range than the 400's, but neither motor is much of a powerhouse to begin with.
