Re: CB 450 project underway!

Time to start digging into the old nasty looking front end. I need to get the forks and tank mounted temporarily so that I can measure and build a set of clip-on handlebars.

After going back and forth, I decided to just polish my forks. With that done, I made up a set of clip-on bars out of 4130 steel. Still need to cut the pinch slot, but I think I like them.

Re: CB 450 project underway!

Anyone know where I can buy some dust covers for my '74 CB 450 K7? I can't stand the original boots and want to go with the short dust cover. Ebay has them for new style CB450's from the 80's, but does not list anything other than the stock long boots for my era of CB450. I know something must work as I have seen others with them on stock appearing shocks.

Re: CB 450 project underway!

Love what you're doing here! Absolutely awesome work Hancock!!!

I had the same issue finding boots. Ended up buying these for my K5, they fit real nice and snug but are just a little short, (meaning height wise) and leave a very small gap in the lower fork grooves, not real noticeable though.

I can take a picture when i get home tonight if you want.

eBay Item number: 360169449355

Re: CB 450 project underway!

Latest update. Been busy with life, but finally made up set of headlight mount ears, tried out the clip-ons, cut my front fender and final assembled the forks. I orded new spokes and will soon tear my wheels apart for paint. I have abunch of parts to finish cleaning/prepping for satin black paint including my front brake caliper, front fender upper triple clamp, clip-ons, headlight ears, wheels, hubs, headlight bucket etc.

Re: CB 450 project underway!

Wow... It has been awhile. Did a bit more painting and laced the front wheel with new spokes.

Re: CB 450 project underway!

WOW! Amazing build! Its given me a lot of inspiration/ideas for my buildup! Keep up the awesome work

Re: CB 450 project underway!

+1 on Amazing Build!

I just found this thread, you're doing some awesome work here man! Keep it up!
That seat set up is the direction I've been looking at taking my 550, glad to see it'll look good. :)

Re: CB 450 project underway!

A few more pics. I really wish my rims were black, but I really did not want to deal with paint flaking/scratching off of chrome later and I don't have a powder coat system.

Re: CB 450 project underway!

Finally got it back on it's wheels. Having trouble making my mind up whether to shoot the seat and tank black, silver or red. Probably will be silver with black stripes on top or vice-versa.

I need to get this thing done.

Re: CB 450 project underway!

Stepping in on this one a little late, but I wanna ask questions :)

Did you ever get the motor to your liking? What type of catalyst did you use? V29 or V27? It's been my experience that the V29 which is also labeled as "exterior" always comes out shiny no matter what you do to it, and the V27 (which isn't labeled anything besides V27) comes out more flat or semi gloss.

Did you have to turn the inside of the tube clamps for the clip ons? Or will it pinch well enough if you just find an ID close enough? What was the ID and what are the forks? I just started cutting some 41mm clip ons for my VFR and I'm worried they have too much slop because the forks are maybe .01" undersized.

It's looking fantastic by the way and I'm looking forward to being jealous when it's done. :)

Short of the bug eyed headlights those Whitehouse DOHC750s make me weak at the knees, and you can build your own for super cheap: *click*

Re: CB 450 project underway!

V27 catalyst and K69 reducer (it is what we stock at work for painting machinery). I typically use Dupont Imron on home projects as I have a bunch of it different colors from past airplane projects and a local paint store that stocks it, but the price was right on this Polane from work and I had some Sherwin Williams flattening paste. ;) The flattening paste works well, but getting the right ratio takes patience as you have to mix it... then spray it... then wait until it dries to check the results.

The forks are the stock '74 CB450 units.... IIRC, they must be 35mm because I think the steel seamless tubing I used was 1 3/8" ID. I did not need to alter the ID as I welded them while they were slid on a chunk of bronze to keep from having burn through. They were pretty much a perfect fit although I think I did polish the IDs up a bit after welding.

Re: CB 450 project underway!

I buy most of my 4130 aircraft tubing from Aircraft Spruce & Specialty unless I have a big airplane fuselage project for which I will shop around some other aircraft supply companies. Aircraft Spruce is on-line and they sell the stuff by the foot whether you want 1' or 100'. It is a tad expensive, but no big deal if you only need a couple feet.

Thanks, I have not been spending any time here at DTT........ It seems I missed a new start up company involving Herm (I remember reading about his clean 450 he was building back when I was actively working on mine). I will have to catch up on what you guys are up to..... maybe it will inspire me to finish my project!

After skimming through your awesome website, I may just have to place an order. I need an o-ring chain (is your 104 link 520 the right size for a stock '74 CB450?), some air filters (any guess as to what size mainjets to use with your 48mm pod filters here in "650ft above sea level" Ohio?) and turn signals (how bright are your bar end signals?... they look dim in your pics on your website).
