Finally got it back on it's wheels. Having trouble making my mind up whether to shoot the seat and tank black, silver or red. Probably will be silver with black stripes on top or vice-versa.

I need to get this thing done.

Mate, not trying to rain on your parade, the satin black/silver works well if broken with a subtle use of colour. Some hand applied red pin-striping around the gas cap or if you are going to stripe the tank seat, accent the stripe with 1/4" orange one side and light blue the other. We have all seen the matt/satin black bikes and they need another colour (restrained) to highlight the black and give it definition, just my opition.... ;D

Thanks for the input..... I always have trouble with paint schemes. I almost have myself talked back into silver tank and seat pan (same color as my painted engine mounts and rearsets) with a couple blacks stripes down the top of them. I absolutely want large Honda wings on the sides of the tank and maybe instead of the black sillouette wings, maybe I will go with the yellowish Honda wings like I was originally considering (like on the 1974 Elsinore 250s).

I buy most of my 4130 aircraft tubing from Aircraft Spruce & Specialty unless I have a big airplane fuselage project for which I will shop around some other aircraft supply companies. Aircraft Spruce is on-line and they sell the stuff by the foot whether you want 1' or 100'. It is a tad expensive, but no big deal if you only need a couple feet.

Sweet, thanks for the heads up on that site. If you remember off the top of your head, would you be able to let me know which part no. you ordered? Im having a hard time converting the measurements and I also need stock for 37mm tubes...any help would be much appreciated.

I think I used some 1 1/2" OD (Outside Diameter) .065" wall thickness (about 1.370" ID) 4130 tube I had left over from an airplane project, but for your reference:

1" = 25.4mm

35mm divided by 25.4= 1.378"
37mm divided by 24.5= 1.457"

So for the 37mm forks you would likely want to order the 1 5/8" OD x .083" wall thickness tube (which happens to be 1.459" ID).

I think I used 7/8 OD x .065" wall thickness for the bars themselves. (4130 chrome moly steel is way stronger/stiffer than mild steel)

Man that was Perfect! Thank you so much.

Re: CB 450 project underway!

Been busy on a huge honey-do list lately for some parties in our shop my wife is hosting, but I did manage to sneak a bit of work in on the 450 project.

Made up some knurled pegs and mounted my tach, speedo, headlight and ignition switch which are all on non stock mounts.

I even "almost" have myself talked into starting the bodywork/paint on my tank and seat. :)

Re: CB 450 project underway!

Oh yeah!! Tank stickered and cleared. Definitely has a bit of the 1974 Honda Elsinore look I was wanting for it.

Would look even nicer with a BCR fiberglass tank, but the challenge of DIY modding of an original steel tank and a DIY all metal seat pan was too much..... Anyone can just "buy" a finished tank. (I guess I am just a cheap SOB )

Re: CB 450 project underway!

Finally got it running.... Still need to finish mufflers, seat pad, turn signals and tail light.

CB450 Cafe racer... finally running!

Re: CB 450 project underway!

Don't you love that sound! I just got my project 450 running not too long ago I was giddy! Your bike looks great, real clean.

Re: CB 450 project underway!

Finally got the mufflers built. It is still loud, but I think it is about right.

I made some flange fittings the hard way from a few chunks of solid 304 stainless. I drew them up on cad for the shop guys at work to make for me, but they were too busy to sneak them in, so I talked one of them at least milling a groove in each part with a CNC mill then I holed sawed out the center at home and used my old non CNC mill to hog off most of the excess on the outside. I then ID chucked them on my old lathe and turned them to size.

I then welded the flanges to my pipes then drilled a shietload of holes. Next I double wrapped them with some stainless steel mesh, then wrapped with fiberglass mat before sliding the cans over top. I still need to drill some more rivet holes to secure the cans, but I rode it down the road and back with a cleco holding the cans on. Sounds OK I guess.

Working on securing the seat pan today and might start on the bar end turn signals.

Re: CB 450 project underway!

Finally got my 450 titled/plated/insured and on the road. My maiden voyage was an 80 mile round trip to work last week.

It seems as though the stock 150 main jets are too small as it runs rough when accelerating from about 65 mph on up. Might try some 160's as my pipes are pretty free flowing as are my pod filters. The bike runs perfect up to 3/4+ throttle settings.

My butt and hands were twingling for quite a while due to the horrible vibration of cruising 65-70 mph for nearly 40 miles. I will need to make a decent seat pad and I think I am going to change my stock 15/35 gearing to 17/35 to lower the cruising rpm a bit.

Anyone here ever try 160 mainjets and 17/35 gearing on a free flowing 1974 450 (I am in Ohio about 700 feet above sea level)?????

Re: CB 450 project underway!

Anyone? Gearing/jetting tips for free flowing lightweight CB450 to be used for highway speeds?

Re: CB 450 project underway!

It's tough to keep up with all the different builds on this site, so I've missed this one, but I dig it. I really like how the rearsets came out. Let's get some more video with the new pipes!

Here is the only video I have presently with the final version of the mufflers.

For some reason almost all of my previous build pics I posted early on here are not showing up anymore.... I am too lazy to post them all again.

Here is a link to another forum that documents my build with lots of pics.

For gearing just go +1 or +2 on the front sprocket if you want the bike to have some longer legs.
Jetting will require some testing on your part to see where you might be rich or lean. If you made the change from stock airbox to pods, you might end up at +5 or so on the main jet. Only one way to find out though.
