CB 450 with two exhaust pipes per cylinder???

Looks like a 500 or 550 to me. The only thing that throws me off, simply because I don't know, is the single down tube in front of the engine that splits below the exhaust ports. I'm not sure if 500 and 550's had a single or twin down tube. But if you look closely, it seems the carb on the right side is sticking out too far for a twin. I don't see why they would put the carb so far out to the side unless there were four of them??

That is a CB400f.....not a CB450k Twin.

CB400f was made mid 70s to late.

THANK YOU!! That's what it is! I just wanted to make sure I wasn't way off-base before I fully called this guy out.... (I wouldn't do that if he didn't deserve it....)

Hard to tell from the angle, but the tank on the CB400F doesn't look quite right. No question it's the CB400F bike, but it almost looks like the 77/78 CB750 tank. May be a hint of a chrome exposed gas cap which would rule that out, but that might be the chrome tubes off the throttle.

Just a little background: This guy is one of those people who now matter what the topic will chime in with "I did that before you" or "I had a better ____ than you" or "I did this and that and the other" and half the time you know he's totally and completely making things up to sound like a big shot.

When he started going on about his "CB450 4 into 1" and how he bought it for $200 and now they're worth over two grand and he should've kept it, yadda yadda yadda I called him out on the '4 into 1' on a twin so he came up with that pic, and claimed outright that it had two cylinders with four exhaust pipes...

Anyway.... I wouldn't care if it was someone who was just talking a little bit, but this dude does this stuff all the time so I wanted to be positive before I told him to STFU.

it's a 400four tank, the early 75/76 models had a chrome flip cap, in 77 they changed it to a covered cap so you don't rip your nuts off if you crash and go over the tank ;D

i though the 400f tank was flat sided with a leather rest strip up the middle like the cb200 tank.

Down here in Australia, we've got a saying at times like those:

"F**k off c**t..."

Alternatively, you could replace 'c**t' with 'mate', depending on how aggrevated you are.

I actually have both the 75 and 77 tanks for CB400F. Can't tell which I prefer more.

Me too. I bought a 77 tank to paint up so I can save my near mint stocker. I have to say, I love the sleek little door on it. Looks awesome. Snagged some repop side covers from David Silver too. Actually just lined that tank with Por15 today. As soon as it cures it'll be getting sprayed. Even bought the paint (including clear coat) already!

The lack or existence of the gas cap isn't why I was thinking it might not be the CB400F tank - it's the overall shape of it. The CB400F tank is pretty angular and flat sided, as mentioned. That tank def. has a 1977 CB750 look to it.

Personally I prefer the chrome gas cap - more old fashioned. And if you're buying a CB400F bike, you want the earlier models for their rear-set footpegs and swingarm mounted passenger pegs. The European models had much nicer lower bars. They added higher-rise bars for the American market ;) BMW did the same. I have Euro-spec bars on my R75/6. 2 inches rise and they're about 25 inches wide vs. 30. Love them.

A 'friend' of mine claims this is his old CB450 which had two exhausts per cylinder making for a twin with a 4-into-1 exhaust.... ?????

yeah sure. It also had 2 intake valves per cylinder, and 2 carbs and spark plugs per cylinder.

What a tool ::)

Call him on it for sure.

So I asked the guy if he worked on the bike himself and didn't he find it weird that a two cylinder had four carbs and four exhaust pipes.....

He just ignored all that and went on to say that he "...ratted it out by painting it flat black and distressing the tank, and this was back in 1992, mind you...." and that he "took a late model Harley Sportster and built a hard tail cafe racer using a hard tail section with less rake". Whatever the f*** he was trying to mean with 'less rake'...... Apparently he also invented 'rat bikes'.... maybe Bratstyle and Wrench Monkees got their ideas from him as well??!!

Oh well, I put the word 'friend' in quotes in the original post for a reason.....

Thanks for the info too guys, much appreciated!
