CB 550 Cafe

Got bored so I figured I could try something out, sandblasted the exhaust joints. I think you can tell which one and which isn't sandblasted. :)

Alright, gots an update....

Went out and worked on the bike a bit, got the from the nearly off, all thats left is the triple tree nuts (which are on freaking on there good). So not really anything pretty or cool, since this Toledo weather is about as temperamental as a woman trying to get ready for a dinner. But with the frame bare ass like it is right now, it got me anything what mods need to made to the frame.

Right now I have planned to make some type electrical panel mounting bracket underneath the seat near the back with the battery bracket directly underneath the seat (modifying the stock one). I am going to cut off the passenger mounts completely and then weld some mounts right inside there for the rearsets. The plan is to find some cheap foot controls from a more modern bike, gsxr or something, and make those work. I'll be making my own linkage set (I am good friends with the Machine shop guys at UT).

KCCO.

Im starting to get really itchy when I'm doing non-motorcycle stuff. So i decided to see how well I could do by trying to mock up a seat in Solidworks. Theres more to come, this was just my first attempt.

VERY Long time, no post. Sorry guys Ive been caught up with school and work. Plus when its averaging single digit temperatures outside, its a little harder to stay out in the garage and be motivated.

However I have been chipping away at some things. Lapped the valves, cleaning the fins on the engine, and complete disassemble of the bike. Other random things until I get some money to buy the stuff I want. (Major problems with work --> no bike money :'( )

But anyways plans ahead include finally making the seat, figuring out the gauge situation, mounting brackets for all (I got an aluminum block from work!!!) and find some foot controls from a new sports bike and figuring out a way to macgyver them on there with a linkage kit.

Man have i been horrible at updating this thing. It honestly probably stems from my despise to social media

Any who, I have a but load of updates. First off, i have found my inner pablo picasso and just painting every lil thing I can. Ive got one pic below showcasing one of the colors I chose (Hint: its grill paint)

Second, is that I just ordered all the necessary parts to actually put the engine back together. That will be done within the next few weeks, just thank god its getting warmer again so i can actually work on this damn thing without losing feeling in my fingers after 2 hours #frostbite #hatesocialmedia

But anyways, what I got left is get the seat made, which is probably happening either this weekend or the next, paint frame and tank and then just reassemble my butt off so I can get on the road. Seeing these bikes on the road is making me itch, and not the healthy itch either.

Alright, circa 2016. I know I haven't posted any pictures, any new updates, etc. for almost 2 years now, mainly because I haven't really had the chance to work on the bike as much as I would have liked during that time period (going to college doesn't help with having "extra" time to do things you want to). But now that I am graduated and out of there, I am finally...finally going to get back to it and get working on the bike again. THANK GOD!!!

So update, at this point there has several modifications that, in the end did (and didn't) work out so well. A lot of cosmetic stuff, some mechanical stuff, and not much else. But I will be updating this as I begin to work on it more so.

And also, for those of you that initially said I wasn't smart to for pulling the motor at a very early stage in my motorbiking career (you didnt say it literally, but you definitely could have)...you were right. It was not smart at all, and in hindsight I would have bought a functioning/reliable small cc bike to learn on, THEN move to something like this. But hey, we live and we learn.

Get at it! I know how college can interfere. In undergrad I worked on everyone else's projects (boats, cars, jet skis), and it was fun. Always driving to jobs on the weekends up to 4 hours away. Then went to grad school which made working on the bike pretty tight with all the school work...Now I teach at the same University haha slightly better.

General question for the DoTheTon-o-sphere,

How do we feel about aftermarket left-hand controls, as in which ones are good and which ones should not be considered.

Right now I am leaning towards these (PS the originals were cracked and buggered up before I even got the bike);

So I haven't done much as of recently (job searching has been my main priority), but I finally landed a job that will pay for all my dreams for this bike after 2 years of heartache. Just to show a decent update, I do have the seat put together and it now has a custom made cushion made for it. My next step is to make sure that the seat is as smooth as I can possibly get it.

After that, there is a few things I need to do/get
  • left handed controls
  • check to see wiring is correct after controls are installed
  • then its off to a friend of mine's mechanic to see if I had killed the motor or if it can be recovered

Hope I can finally get out there sooner than later.
