CB125 race bike build - Getting closer

Well, it started off as a beginner bike for my wife, when she told me she didnt want to learn to ride, I took that as a hint to turn it into a vintage racer

TheKawonda.jpg

Specs so far:

CB125 frame forks swingarm and motor
Kawasaki S2 350 tank
home made rear sets (not pictured)
Drag bars
wiring harness removed and made my own to eliminate all lights and such
Number plates
Dead man kill switch

Need some more inspiration, I am loosing the front disk and going with a drum from an XL or XR 125 (whatever I can find cheapest) and not sure if I should go with some knobby looking enduro tires for a dirt track racer look or a cheap set of street tires.

No motor mods yet other then i cut the rotten muffler off, and havent decided on an exhaust setup yet.

Send me your inspiration, and I will send you build pictures

Re: Need some more inspiration

Well started working on it tonight.

Got a new Mac performance upswept muffler

Decided i need to ditch the square number plates and go to vintage ovals

more pics soon

Re: Need some more inspiration

More work done tonight.

made up the new connector for the head pipe to the new mac muffler, will do the final welding of it tomorrow just tacked it all together with the flux core welder (crap !) so i will finish it with the good mig welder tomorrow at work.

Also sent the seat out to the upholsters today, decided to have the foam shaved down slightly and the cafe hump added to the back.

A little undecided about tires, I am going with a street tire, but should I just go a little cheaper? The bike doesnt go fast enough to spin the rear tire hammerin on the track ;)

Pictures tomorrow with the muffler mounted.

Muffler mocked up

will be fully welded tomorrow and the header and mid pipe painted black, muffler left chrome

Re: CB125 race bike build

Had a quick fire up with the mac muffler mounted, sounded like crap, so its back off, just going to run a little turn out tail pipe (the tracks i run dont need a baffle)

Changing the color as I ordered decals today, the decals are gold with black trim and some white in them, so I am un decided about painting the bike either red or green

Input??

Re: CB125 race bike build

Id go with the Red , Thats what i did!!!

how about a smaller thank sat sr250 Honda?
but looking good so far man

Re: CB125 race bike build

I really only went with that tank because its what I had on hand. This is a very budget build, so far, including the purchase of the bike, i am sitting at 325 dollars and change... I hope to come out at less then 600 (just need to paint tank, apply decals, change my number plates and add proper numbers)

The seat will cost about 150 and I should see it tuesday.

Your bike looks good, I do believe I will go red, what shade is that?

Re: CB125 race bike build

meh. not a "race bike" unless if you plan to race it. if that were the case, youd be seriously considering good tires and looking at suspension work, as well as what class it is legal for.

i think you should race it.

Re: CB125 race bike build

I am racing it, next summer.

Suspension will be just rear shocks and progressive fronts,

My points system is fine, easy to troubleshoot on the track, no CDI box to crap out, plus they are cheap.

This is just a cheap bike to get me started into racing, if I like it, I am going to upgrade to a CB500 four or higher, this is just a "honey, dont spend too much money on something you might not like at all"

::)

Re: CB125 race bike build

racing it where? in what organization?
I know that the 500 doesnt fit into much well either.

I do have some fun parts for a CB125 that im selling....hit me up

Re: CB125 race bike build

Going into the VRRA in ontario here, pretty much just hit Mosport track..

At the moment, the XR 200 head kind of caught my eye, is that complete with valves and cam? do i need to swap my 125 cam into it?

Re: CB125 race bike build

head has the valves and rockers.
No cam

you want the mega cycle cam for the motor....
you can get really nuts and get a needle bearing cam but thats kinda big bucks
if not powroll witll make a cam that will work in the RPM range you need for a road race motor.

XR swap is great. much better ports

Re: CB125 race bike build

the xr cam from megacycle? or a cb?

I am very interested in this setup now.. What year of head? (for cam reference)

Jeff - Very nice bike! I am buying paint tonight, thats what I want !

Decals came in today, but they were closed by the time I was done work, so I am picking them up in the morning, hopefully they are a good enough size (i just guessed looking at the tank)

Seat will be done tuesday afternoon, so expect a lot of pictures between now and tuesday evening

Re: CB125 race bike build

not 100% sure of the head year. there is only one range that fits the Cbs. ill try and dig it up.

its actually a common swap so if you let the cam people know what you are building they can help.
its a road race cam for a dirt bike engine. a dirt bike cam would suck for road racing.

Re: CB125 race bike build

@ curtis you were selling this in peterborough right? my brother was going to trade for it or something. (i have a cb125 and he is jealous of it haha)

Re: CB125 race bike build

Got looking at webcamshafts and megacycle website.

Hard to tell which one I need to go with, I prefer webcamshafts for getting cams and parts, they always treat me very well ( I have bought a few items from them in the past )

As for right now, I am thinking I will be leaving the motor stock for the time being, I am taking it on the track in about 2 weeks to test it out ( will have just crap street tires though ) I will see how it performs on the oval, then I will be adding my performance shocks and working on sourcing out a good set of front springs.

I am hoping the seat comes back to me on tuesday like they have promised. I started looking more at my rear brake setup, and my home made rear sets, just wasnt going to cut it, so I grabbed my rear sets from the H1 that wont be on the road anytime soon, and I will fab up the mount bracket tomorrow after work.

Going to attempt to finish the tank in the next few nights, there are two small dents in it, that I honestly dont mind them being there, its only going to see the track, not the show room ;) I am probably going to crash the bike anyways, because I have never raced before, so I dont see the point in spending a ton of time and money on something that will more then likely get messed up.

Re: CB125 race bike build

Picked the decals up today, they look awesome.

Also picked up my race stand as I am eliminating the side stand today when I fab up my rear sets.

The wife is working tonight, So that means I can work without the honey do list creeping up on me un expectantly.

First job today - rear sets mounted and working

Second - Finish tank

Third - make 2 small brackets for my rear number plate, also changing the side number plates, they will be alot smaller, and positioned further back, I will hide the triangle with some pieces of either stainless sheet metal, or just regular ole tin painted black ( the triangle holds my battery and gas over flow bottle)
