CB175 Cam Timing

Hey guys,

I'm new here, but have benefited from a lot of posts already in my build.

I had to do some engine work on my '71 cb175 and had a question:

How exactly do you set the valve timing? I have seen how to adjust the points, but can't seem to find much of anything on this. Any help?

Thanks!

Post pics and let us know if you have a Honda service manual.

Cam timing, right? that's what you are looking for. The cam controls the valve timing.

In addition you will need to provide more details.
Here's what I hear based on your post and the way you addressed the issue.

'i did some engine work'

'Shit ain't workin right'

'how do I fix it'.

Haha, that's basically my post....

I'll post pics after work tomorrow. I have a manual, just wanting to make sure I am understanding it correctly.

Thanks!

Look at the cam sprocket and you should see a small O stamped into the sprocket which is at the top when the motor is at TDC. Check you manual again and post pics of what you have an issue with.

Obviously that is checked without the top cover in place so you can see the cam sprocket. If the top cover is on and bolted down it's a little harder to check for correct valve opening and closing times. The FSM is not very clear unless you are already sure of what you are doing. It can be confusing if you have not done it before, but the info is in there.

Start by setting the crank to TDC and look at the cam sprocket. Can you see that O stamp? If not, rotate it another 360 degrees and watch for the O as you rotate the crank. If all looks fine, check that teh points drive pin is pointing straight up.
