My knowledge comes from me sitting there with my MAPP torch for 4 minutes unable to get a red glow. I got the surface discoloration you referenced but with the lever in my vice and some good whacks with a dead blow, no movement.
Maybe it's the tip on the small torch I have? I don't have a MAP-Pro. Mine works well for 3/8" or so. Anything more and it's hit or miss depending on the cross section. Flat bar no prob.
I used this kit - about $45 and included both the torch head and a MAP-Pro filled cylinder. Looked online but I can't find any specific output ratings for it. It's my understanding that MAPP is no longer available but MAP-Pro is an equivalent. Perhaps it actually burns hotter.
As for method, it was really rudimentary. With the lever in a vice, I kept the heat on there for about a minute moving it around the circumference to try and get even heating and eventually got a healthy orange glow. Once there it was rather easy to bend. The one above for the 175 has two bends which I did with two separate heat cycles about 30 minutes apart (quenching in between).
P.s. Not dogging on your credentials just curious if there was another reason. I'm happy to defer to opinions of those with actual education in technical areas.

Tried this again tonight with MAPP and used a 48" Irwin pipe wrench. That lever was long enough
New problem is to clear the rear sets that a lot of us have, you need a substantial bend, which makes the kickstart lever stick out in a precarious way when not in use. I mean it's literally right in front of my shin - not next to it. Unsafe.
I reverted back to the CRF and ground some more meat off. You just have to grind enough off to be able to get enough throw to start it. Guess that's where I'll land on the issue. It tucks away nice and tidy when not in use.
It's a shame the swivel-out CRF 50 style lever doesn't look like such a good fit on the vertical CB175's (in terms of clearance) as it would be pretty ideal otherwise, or so it seems.

Are there any others that might work in the same way, but with a less bulky fit up near the engine casing?
