CB175 Should I replace rings?

Is there any harm to putting the engine back together with the same piston rings? I haven't taken them off the pistons, and haven't messed with the motor other than to clean all the sludge out and rebuild the head.

I really don't want to spend the extortion prices for OEM rings. Yes, they are stock pistons.

Thanks for any advice!

What was compression like before you took it apart? You know which piston goes in which cylinder still?

Of course you can put them back in. As long as they are not overly worn the motor should behave as it did prior to pulling it down. It's just that if you are going to spend $$$ on gaskets / head work, etc it makes sense to do the rings while you are already in there.

They can get brittle with age, so you want to be extra careful putting the cylinders back on or you could easily break them.

The compression was awful, but I attribute that to the valves since they didn't close all the way, which is why I did the head work. I photographed the pistons before dis-assembly and made sure they got back to the correct cylinders. The bike has only 9k miles on it, and the rings seem pretty solid.

Ok, well I browsed Ebay a bit here and apparently I can get a standard set for $25. However, the standard set is 5 rings...? I thought there are 3 rings/piston.

Yes I will hone with a flex-hone tool.

When I said set, I was meaning per piston, but I was also looking at a set of oversized ones, and there were 5 total, not 5 per.

EDIT: scratch that, I'm an idiot. ;D I'll just get these rings and hone. Thanks for the advice guys.

The multi piece oil ring is easier to fit as the rails are made of spring steel instead of cast iron.
175 will usually destroy big ends before rings break from over-revving
