CB175 Wheels aren't truing

Been Around the Block
I am working to get my wheels trued, but I am not having any luck. As far as I know, and when I measured before dismantling, the hubs don't have and offset. But I still have some spokes that are too loose even when almost out of thread...

Any advice?

I just laced and trued my wheels for my CB400f last night and this morning so this fresh in my mind. If you are going to do this, I would advise using news spokes and nipples if yours are ratty.

All rims have some degree of axial offset, whether they are centered, left or right. I measure and note the original offsets prior to removing the wheel and spokes. Most front rims are centered in between the front forks, so start with your front wheel first. Assuming it is centered between the front forks, true it so each side of the rim is equal distance from the inside of the forks. Like this:

With front wheel centered and true, next run straight edges to loosely lace rear wheel. You want the center of your front rim to be aligned withe center of your rear.

Move the rear rim left and right until it is in line with your centered front rim. Measure the offset on both sides of the rear rim relative to the hub in several places to determine your rear offset.

Tighten your spokes and true your rim to match the offset. Tighten spokes on one side to "pull" the rim in the desired direction and loosen spokes to "push" it the other direction. When the axial (left to right or wobble) runout is nearly true switch and work on the radial (up and down or hop) runout. Tighten on low, loosen on high. Go back and true the axial and then the radial runout again and you will be true.

Here is a good thread on the basics of lacing and truing from SOHC forum by Dan Jones http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=19575.0
Good luck and post your results!

Wow! Thanks for the write up. I will work on that this week. I found a guy near me that is going to stop by and together I'm sure we can get it figured out. I will post up results and pictures in my build thread. I'll make a note here when I'm finished.

Thanks a lot!

SZ, I'll checked out your build tread, cool little bike! Good work and I see you took the wheels down the rims. Pop some new bearings in the hubs and lace and true them as I described above. See what I did on my Goldie with the rims, hubs, and alignment: http://www.dotheton.com/forum/index.php?topic=20929.40

Thanks Swan! I did get the new bearings and have put them in. I think I might end up re-lacing the wheels. I've got a lot of Axial wobble on the front and haven't messed with the rear yet. Does the rim orientate one way, or does it matter? Meaning, I saw that you had marked your rim for brake-side and so on. Since mine got powder-coated I did not mark them.

Very nice BSA. You do some great work!
