CB200 transmission/clutch issue

Been Around the Block
Just picked up cb200 for the girlfriend and the only problem on the bike is first gear. I changed the oil/adjusted the clutch and she fires right up. While on the center stand, I can put it into first gear and completely release the clutch with no issues/noises. When the bike is on the ground, with the clutch let out right where it begins to grab, it makes a chatter noise coming from the right cover and never does anything. I can start the bike in 2nd gear no problem. First gear is the only issue. Could it be something with the frictionplates/pressure plates? I have new friction plates coming in just to be on the safe side. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks guys

id pull the cover to check the plates and see if theres any issues.

does it occur between shifts?

are all the covers tight?

if its only with first gear i would assume issues with that gear. i bet you that pulling the motor and splitting the cases would reveal worn first gear/other mayhem.

did you find metal shavings in oil when you changed the oil?

I fear that Rocan is on to something. It sounds almost like the dogs on first gear are worn and/or that selector fork is bent/worn. If it shifts OK through teh oter gears and first is the only issue, I'd strip the trans out and see what's going on.

It's messy, but the motor can be partially stripped and leave the top end on - if the motor is known to have a good top end. Drain the oil, remove the clutch cover and inspect it. Check the clutch and plates etc. If that is not the problem, drop the motor out, remove side covers and split the cases withe motor upside down to get to the trans. Shift it manually into first gear and see how the dogs are engaging or skipping.

Re: CB200 transmission/clutch issue (need part ASAP!! HELP)

I finally found time to pull the ride side cover and inspect everything. After pulling the clutch basket, I noticed it is missing the 20mm thrust washer. After trying bike-bandit and a lawn mower supply, they are both backordered for 2+ weeks. I'd like to get the part in asap to finish up the bike for a christmas present to my gf. In the linked diagram, it is part # 40. Please let me know if you have this part. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Missing thrust washer would be a problem in all gears, not just first
Time to learn how a simple transmission works
