Cb350 backbone trimming?

Wondering if it is safe to cut off the lip where the two halfs of the backbone sandwich together and weld a solid bead down the backbone. Seems like it would be stronger by wanted some experienced input. I'm mounting an rd400 tank and I'd like to mount it lower than the pinchweld will allow.

That's what I did to mine. I cut the lip, welded a bead down the center and then took a piece of 2" x .063"ish strap and welded it on top to give a litter extra strength.

Any pics with the strap welded down? I was thinking I could cut the lip down but still leave about 1/8" and weld a bead down that so it still has the strength from the shape but doesn't take up so much godamn room.

That's what you want to do. Cut out 4 to 8 inch sections of the lip at a time to keep things from shifting and leaving about 3/16" of the lip height and then weld it up solid. And keep repeating til all the pichwelds are gone.

You want to leave the 3/16" of height for added strength. If you cut it all off and butt weld the frame halves the metal may tear.

I'm away in Pennsylvania until mid-April doing a military school so i don't have any pics right now with the tank off to show you. If you haven't figured something out by then send me a pm and I'll take some when I get home.
