Those dudes are certified USDA Prime assholes who suggested I go here and hang out with all the other douche bags. Fuck wits...

There will always be elitist assholes in this world, you just gotta leave them behind. Its usually a penis envy thing. They're angry because they've got small dicks and ugly, skanky women!

Re: CB350 Built by a teen (Millin' and billdin')

Unpleasant experience with the Keepers and Protectors of all things Cafe. Sorry to digress. My bad.

Re: CB350 Built by a teen (Millin' and billdin')

If everyone on here who has given me hours of distraction, inspiration and advice are douche bags, then I'm happy to be a douche bag too.
Dunno what a douche bag is though, I don't think we have them in the UK, what do you put in them?
;)

haha... fame indeed.

for dry fit, i'm a bit confused... how can I check if the piston edge is above the top of the cylinder instead if I dont have the pistons installed? xD

also a source for copper gaskets would be awesome...

Doh, I meant to say leave rings off piston and fit only one piston to rod (don't need circlips, your only fitting it to measure stuff.
I was pretty stressed this morning, the ONLY reason I could think of to have me in work yesterday and today was to fire me (reduction in force about 50~60 people being laid off)
Well this afternoon it happened an I'm now one of the unemployed, with a fucked up arm and pretty much no prospect of getting a job at least until I'm 80% healed (possibly 6 months or more?)
Offered consultation with job placement agency?
has to be taken up in 30 days, yea, right, fat lot of good it's going to do me, who the hell is going to employ anyone with a dodgy arm plus possibility (probability?) of further surgery?
Bit bitter and twisted at present

Re: CB350 Built by a teen (Millin' and billdin')

shit PJ... thats terrible to hear.

Re: CB350 Built by a teen (Millin' and billdin')

Yeah, PJ, put an ad on craigslist for old motorcycle service and if its anything like here you'll have more work than you can handle. I don't know a 10th of what you do and I'm cleaning carbs and changing chains and sprockets all day long.

Re: CB350 Built by a teen (Millin' and billdin')

Problem is, my left arm is messed up from surgery

Re: CB350 Built by a teen (Millin' and billdin')

then hire a young lad to help you out... heck, find someone like me... willing to work for a fraction of the cost that you would, hed appreciate the experience more then the money, hed be young and able... all youd have to do is organize the jobs and guide him in his work. hire a couple of them and you can have a small business going for yourself...

PJ's Classic Cycle Shop.... I can see it now...

Re: CB350 Built by a teen (Millin' and billdin')

Did some good work today... got my swingarm channel welded (I'm actually not to bad of a welder... i was laying some smoothish beads using 7018), then ground down again. still needs some finishing work and then body filler. Also got my brake stay welded on so the swingarm is more or less ready for finish work and paint.

Also trued the rear wheel. Under .01" runout side to side and up and down, she wont get any better then that. Really wish I had alloy rims, the wheels weigh a ton.

Checked the piston clearance with cylinder mounted flush on crankcase. now I need some help here....

my understanding is that you check how high the piston edge comes out from cylinder... well, It doesn't protude at all. perfectly flush. double checked that the cylinder is flush, and it is.

I did check the piston dome (top of piston) height above the top of cylinder and came out with .0352", might be off a little bit as its hard to measure. Measured the paper gasket I have and got .0215" thickness.... so, what thickness copper gasket do I need?

Re: CB350 Built by a teen (Millin' and billdin')

Piston top is flush with top of cylinder without a base gasket?
How thick is base gasket?
Base gasket will, in effect, 'drop' piston into cylinder
I would probably get a 0.016" copper base gasket and a 0.024"~ copper head gasket so you have a 0.040" piston to head clearance.
A better way to do it would be use a thicker head gasket (0.040") and have cylinder block skimmed to get correct clearance

Re: CB350 Built by a teen (Millin' and billdin')

I'd have to check costs on getting the cylinder block skimmed to do it.... but yeah, the piston skirt (the part of the piston that is flat; not the dome, thats
.0352" above the cylinder top) perfectly flush without base gasket.

Re: CB350 Built by a teen (Millin' and billdin')

Piston skirt is the bottom bit inside cylinder, like a skirt, it's open at the bottom.
The crown sticks up and forms bottom of combustion chamber, it includes all of the top, you define high dome, low dome, flat, recessed, cupped, bowl, etc
I thought you had Boretech pistons?
The edge of piston should be level with top of block, with a base gasket fitted to get 10.5~11:1 or whatever you ordered?
Personally I've never liked high dome pistons but sometimes it's the only way to get a decent C.R., may have to adjust timing to give more total advance?
Not too much of a big deal with a small combustion chamber like 350~450's (not really a problem until you get over 500cc per cylinder/around 85mm bore, I forget why though)
If possible it's better to machine head to reduce combustion chamber volume and fit lower dome pistons
