CB350 Built by a teen (Weld Now, Grind Later)

I dunno man, don't think I'd go that high with pump gas. Even if you can get 93 octane regularly I think you'll be pushing it.
If you are running the actual race pistons, you could have the domes turned down a bit to save your engine..

nope, no race pistons... too pricy and i would hate to have to keep race fuel at my house! :D

11.25 should be ok... i want to go high as i can without retarding timing, because that defeats the purpose

Re: CB350 Built by a teen (SO many parts in!)

If you cam it big enough you can keep the terminal cylinder pressure at bay. I don't know what the specs are on that K0 cam though....
I really think you should reconsider just how narrowly you want to tune the engine. If you figure for 10.5 to one you can run pump gas, you'll have a decent range of timing from set at idle to max advance and you won't have to worry about combustion temps getting out of hand.

Just my opinion though, knock yourself out.......

Re: CB350 Built by a teen (SO many parts in!)

lol is it too late in to say this is an amazing project! :) threads like yours give me alot of inspiration to actually get off my ass and build something lol good luck.

haha no worries man, i take it all to thought.

the whole point was to keep the powerband fairly wide, while "tuning" it to start making serious power by 7500-8500 rpm, up to redline. combustion temps would probably see an increase, but nothing causing worry. if it somehow is an issue, i guess i would have a good excuse for that oil cooler/cam oiler ive always wanted! :D

but again, for now, its going to stay unshaved. maybe down the road ill change it up a bit....

Re: CB350 Built by a teen (SO many parts in!)

got the pan off... stubs were easy to grind away, and its obviously very easy to tap some holes and puts some bolts in there. there was sludge underneith it that would have never came out without removing this pan. interesting.

got nothing done otherwise, weekend was wasted for the sake of college application shit.

fucking pissed. but oh well.

pics tomorrow.

Re: CB350 Built by a teen (SO many parts in!)

Better than the weekend being ruined b/c you had a sick kid, or the car broke down, or you needed to reshingle the roof, or the wifes family was in town, or you lost your job, or your units getting deployed, or...

Just sayin. Stay positive my friend. Youll finish her up in due time. You have all winter.

Re: CB350 Built by a teen (SO many parts in!)

:p

thanks von, i needed that. you rock.

Re: CB350 Built by a teen (SO many parts in!)

whats this? a heavy box?

not pistons... but it seems there is two shafts, a load of tiny bits, and 6 gears on each shaft. seems it will fit in my crankcase, guess its going in. ;D ;D

heres pics of the splash guard removed...
lots of crud underneath that would have otherwise remained there! its easy to see how to drill/ tap this in order to put bolts in place.

also my dad got a small scrawl saw in order to replace my lovely big one. i dont understand his thinking, but the big one isnt going anywhere. he wanted to save space? no point in saving space by replacing good useful large tools with small ones.

I'm pretty late into this but, oh boy, you do some good work. Keep it up.

too late? nahhhh. you arrived just as the work got good! haha.

learned it all by doing it wrong the first time. ;)

welcome to what will end up being the longest thread in the history of motorcycle rebuild threads. ;D

i have to many girls begging for a ride to not finish it now! :D :D

What is funny about this is when I first chimed in he said girls didn't understand it. He has worked on it so long that the girls have finally come around and they want some. I believe we said about college age. Looks like you are on track! Don't sweat it. I have 4 projects and I cannot focus on something as long as you so I know you will be riding (something) by 2012.

Re: CB350 Built by a teen (SO many parts in!)

haha... interesting point there two wheels! haha. awesome.

Re: CB350 Built by a teen (SO many parts in!)

Its funny how once they see you're serious then they get interested - hell, a mates girlfriend went all funy after I took her for a spin on the 1100 hahaha.

As for the scrawl (we call them scroll saws here) I'll always remember 8th grade woodwork class. Teacher asks a random kid what the name of the scrawl is, after a lesson on shop machinery and their uses. He looks around for a bit then says "Uh... Mini-Bandsaw?" :D

Let us know how that 6-speed goes hey?

Cheers - boingk

Re: CB350 Built by a teen (SO many parts in!)

will do!

was going to get some work done yesterday. some girl got in the way. spent 24 hours straight with her, was might fun.

anyway...

tracking number says my cylinder arrived in ohio! means itll be bored and sent back to me soon enough. ill fit the 6 speed, and if it shifts well, ill split cases again and paint, then give final assembly. have to weld on a rear hoop to the frame (finally figured out what i want, now to bend a flat 1/4 inch thick piece of steel into a U bend) then a quick sandblast will mean its ready for paint. motor will go in, then ill press in the head bearings, fit the forks etc etc... shit i just realized how close i am to having a runnable bike... only big thing that will take up serious time is finishing the tank.

WOOH! :D

You did get the selector drum and shift forks with six speed, plus the detente piece on end of shift drum?

got the whole bottom end ;) ;)

Re: CB350 Built by a teen (6 speed?)

Did some organizing on my bench, welded a valve spring compressor (which works, kinda... will make a better one at some point). spent an hour cleaning the sludge out of the crankcase... almost done. i HATE sludge. no pics, maybe tomorrow.

also cleaned up the combustion chamber a bit. I get the feeling that when i was transporting bike in the back of my truck, on its side, oil got into the chamber, and burnt a shitload of it... black shit all over chamber that comes off relatively easily (not really carbon). oh well.

i can work more efficiently now that i moved half the shit off my bench and onto the "parts for the gods of speed" wall. also put up a few nails so i can hang a couple of my tools better.

getting there... slowly. tomorrow ill be doing work on valves (polishing) and combustion chamber (more cleaning... need to obtain a burret so i can match the volume). once volume is matched, they will get a mirror finish... its easy to see the machining marks in the combustion chamber. since i can feel them with my nail, im guessing they are also "hot spots"... in short, performance can be had with some work!

Re: CB350 Built by a teen (6 speed?)

forgot to grab pics of the spring compressor...

cleaned last of the sludge from the crankcase.... now to clean exterior some more before blasting it. i need to buy more media as i get the feeling mines all worn.

blasted the top of the crankcase a bit just to clean it up. need to hit it once more to get some spots i missed, but first i have to find a way to get off the damn base gasket which appears to be glued on. didnt get anything else done as i was a bit hungover/ had TONS of homework to finish for AP biology. been at it 6 hours now... :(

Re: CB350 Built by a teen (6 speed?)

havent put pics up as i have been busy at work and doing homework.

mother told me she would buy me car of my choice thats under 10 grand as long as i didnt ride a motorcycle ever again. it was tempting, but i just KNEW i would sell the car and buy 10 bikes.

just... couldnt stay away... too much work into this bike to stop now. maybe if she asked me when i bought it.

spent 100 bucks at Harbor Freight... got some goodies including dial indicator, stand, dial caliper, and a bunch of other odds and ends.

for now, back to homework. :p

Re: CB350 Built by a teen (6 speed?)

ordered tires from denniskirk as they had the best deals ive seen yet. came out to 158.96 total, for two tires, two tubes.

got sizes 90/90-18 front and 100/90-18 rear. will have to run higher then normal pressure to make up for sidewall flex until i buy wider rims down the road (no pun intended).

here are the pics i owed you guys for a while. the bottle is a vintage rust remover, circa 1960s or so. god knows whats in it. but it works! :D :D

played around with the macro on my camera a bit... got a good shot of the stock casting imperfection which will be filed out! now im thinking i should have bought an air powered file... :D
