Re: CB350 Built by a teen (Just call me Buffy... polished crankcase!! PICS UP!)

dude, man, the engine cases..... wow..
good work man.
your cool points are working their way up again ;D

Re: CB350 Built by a teen (Just call me Buffy... polished crankcase!! PICS UP!)

Looks great. I don't even want to know how long that took.

Re: CB350 Built by a teen (Just call me Buffy... polished crankcase!! PICS UP!)

I'll double check what tip I have in there today.

yeah, maintenance will be slightly annoying, but im not going to care for scratches and knicks in the finish; they all add to character. this bike will be ridden and ridden HARD. that you can count on.

indie... hours are mentioned on the last page... around 150 ;)

Re: CB350 Built by a teen (Just call me Buffy... polished crankcase!! PICS UP!)

Wow David, that looks fantastic, way more polishing than I ever want to do, lol... Keep it up!

Re: CB350 Built by a teen (Just call me Buffy... polished crankcase!! PICS UP!)

just ran out to grab a tap and drillbit to put in the oil baffle plate, and that means its bottom end assembly time! WOOH! Lets see how much I get done, have to go to girlfriends birthday party at 7.

Re: CB350 Built by a teen (Just call me Buffy... polished crankcase!! PICS UP!)

If i was single and didn't have wife and kids, with all the time in the world, this is how my polished parts would look like! Very nice job and respect to you for taking the time!

Re: CB350 Built by a teen (Just call me Buffy... polished crankcase!! PICS UP!)

David, I've shipped all of my aluminum to you via next day air! Good stuff dude!

Re: CB350 Built by a teen (Just call me Buffy... polished crankcase!! PICS UP!)

thanks guys!

bottom end assembly has begun... got the crank in with my camilla cam chain, torqued down to 15ft pounds, got the shift drum in, but got stuck when i couldnt find the neutral stopper ball bearing... there is a ball bearing there, right? anyone know what size it is? i had to stop for the day; have to show up to my girlfriends 18th birthday.

Re: CB350 Built by a teen (Just call me Buffy... polished crankcase!! PICS UP!)

I read somewhere (but now, of course, can't find the article) that polishing up your whole engine wasn't a good idea. Something to do with the smoother metal both having less surface area and promoting laminar air flow. Those thing things together led to greater temperatures in the engine and head and caused the oil to break down sooner?

Any else have info on this?

Re: CB350 Built by a teen (Just call me Buffy... polished crankcase!! PICS UP!)

If you use high quality (semi or full synthetic) oil it should'nt matter that much

Re: CB350 Built by a teen (Just call me Buffy... polished crankcase!! PICS UP!)

a motor like this simply does not produce enought power or heat for the polish to be an issue... as far as the oil goes i NEVER run a synthetic in a bike older than an 85, i use Rotella regular oil... always got better cooler results
no real reason to back it just experiance

Re: CB350 Built by a teen (Just call me Buffy... polished crankcase!! PICS UP!)

Must have missed that in my excitement to see the pics. 150 hours? You're lucky to have a girlfriend to celebrate a birthday with!

You need to get your balls under control mate ;)

hillsy, many times while polishing ive realized that i had started to go totally against my original thoughts about polished parts.

haha... its a fine line between THAT, and justttt enough. theres few other parts that are polished...

well, besides fork legs, rearsets, top triple tree, headlight ears, some other bits of the mo.....

fuck, i overdid it. ;)

Same thing happened to me. When I first started I didn't want any polished stuff on my bike. Now theres a decent amount polished, and I plan to polish even more. But there definitely is a threshold, of which thereafter it starts to look tacky.

Re: CB350 Built by a teen (Just call me Buffy... polished crankcase!! PICS UP!)

We went over it at some point a number of times.... polished motor=more heat as the heat can't dissipate as quickly and the polished surface, in simple terms, holds in the heat. but being the crankcase and being that the CB350 never had any overheating issues, it should be fine. it will run warmer, sure, but it wont be an issue whatsoever.

Agreed on keeping my balls in check, they seem to be in the most random of places. ;)

this is the best girlfriend ever guys... she makes absolutely zero decisions, plays more videogames then I do, is pretty as they get, doesn't mind handing me tools as i work on my bike, blah blah blah...

not to mention her father owns an excellent restaurant thats open 24/7...
and best of all, she actually likes me back!
man I got lucky...

Getting her and myself tickets to see the Strokes play at madison square garden, takes a bunch from my bike budget, but she deserves it.

Back to bike....

Re: CB350 Built by a teen (Just call me Buffy... polished crankcase!! PICS UP!)

I'll be the first, Why did you tap a crooked hole in your crank case?

Re: CB350 Built by a teen (Just call me Buffy... polished crankcase!! PICS UP!)

haha, i was waiting for you guys to notice...

they all came out a bit crooked... but they all work justttt fine. its damn hard to drill those holes straight as the bottom of the crankcase doesnt sit paralell to the holes, and using a drill press its hard to get them straight.

plus no one will ever look at it ;)

Re: CB350 Built by a teen (Just call me Buffy... polished crankcase!! PICS UP!)

you need to use blocks to level the case, then a punch, then a smaller bit to give you a pilot hole... looks rushed is all man... can not just jump to a big bit on that... moving to fast = bad drill holes
and dude using a drill press gives you strait holes... but you have to line up the object right, drill presses can only go up and down it only goes strait
