I am rebuilding an engine for a new brat style bike I am building. I am currently rebuilding the crank and I am debating on reusing the currant rods or get new ones. I am on a low budget and hope to save the money on the rods, or if any one knows where I can find low cost ones. I have new pistons and pins. The rods holes are a bit oviled, side to side is .5915 and up and down is .593 and the pins are .5905
service limit for the rods is replace if over .593 so you don't have any wiggle room
wrist pins are cheap no reason not to replace if worn
you can't just replace the rods a crankshaft assembly in better condition is the only way to go
let me know if you want a better crankshaft i have one available
I am using a mic and a telescopic gauge. thanks for the offer but if I am going to spend any money I will put it into new rods. that way they are fresh and new.
good, you can only get a really accurate measure that way
where are you going to find new rods ? they were never even available from honda as far as i know
you do know it is a built up crankshaft just like a 2 stroke
so whats really happening is a friend and myself are doing a bike each. we have got a total of 5 bike and are hoping to make 2. as of now we have 4 engines apart and have just enough parts to make two cranks minus the rods. Your are right about the build up crank, I have already pressed them apart and are back together up to the con rods. I thought we had enough parts until I checked the bore on the upper end of the rods. we have 2 that are at .5924 and the other 2 are at .593 the rest are corroded bad. my buddy has the 5th engine so cant check them. but I doubt that they will be good. I know the manual says if over .593 then replace. I was just wondering how important that tolerance is.
