CB350 kickstart issue

Just bought my first bike. Brought it home and started to do some work and noticed I missing both the shifter pedal and the kick-start pedal/lever/whatever it's technically called.
The shifter works fine, so all I need for that is a lever.
The kick-start on the other hand....had JB Weld all over it, which made me curious enough. I cracked it all off with some pliers to find that I can simply spin the kick-start shaft with my fingers. That's no good, it's supposed to be turning my motor over! So I dig deeper.
I took the right side engine cover off and then removed the kick-start shaft, as at this point, it can just be slid out. Shined a flashlight in the hole, to find this sight greeting me:

Hmmm. Gears laying in the bottom of my crankcase. No good.
Fast forward a long night.
I have the motor out and on the bench and am about to split the case, but I can't figure if there are two ways to go about this or not. The shifter linkage behind the clutch assembly is what's stopping me. It's keeping me from just simply removing the bottom case. The only way I can see removing it or even getting at it would be to remove the clutch assembly. Well in true vehicle fashion, to remove that, it LOOKS like I have to remove the centrifugal oil filter. To do that, I need a "special lock nut wrench"....which I made:
Apologies for the horrid cell-phone pic

Well, it's really hard to keep the crank still while I'm trying to unscrew something from...well, the crank.

So after a possibly annoyingly long explanation, here lies the question.
Is there an easier way to get this thing split so I can figure out what's going on with my kick-starter?
If there isn't, what's the best way to keep the crank still while I reef on that lock nut?

Thanks for any help!

Use a 14mm wrench to hold the magneto still on the other side. BTW, let me know what kick starter parts you need. I have a whole extra assembly.

Your on for a full engine strip, cant be removed or fixed until you get inside cases.
You have to dismantle the entire primary side

Remove the engine and turn it upside down, strip the clutch side cover and clutch and oil pump.Remove all the crankcase bolts(top and bottom) remove the bottom case. The kickstart assemble is encapusuled in the bottom case, and can be dismantled by removing the very small circlip on the end of the assembly.Remember to clean all contact surfaces on the cases,,and use a sealer before reassembly,,,,,,,,,good luck ::)

Ok, I've got some progress.
I have the case cracked open, and all the kickstart parts that were laying in there. I 'believe' these are all the parts there are, minus the little clip that holds it all together.

All the working parts look real good expect the end of the shaft itself. So maybe the only thing I need is the kick-start shaft.

djelliott: Do you still have the assembly? I'm gonna need at least the shaft. I bought the bike from a guy that owns/works at (not sure which) a motor sport salvage yard. I'll check with him first to see if I can get hooked up on the cheap from him since he sold it to me saying it ran...well I wouldn't want to drive down the road with gears bouncing in the bottom of the crankcase...

man, if my kick start broke, id just run my bike bump start only ;)

the only thing more badass then kickstarting your bike is running down the block, popping the clutch while hopping on the saddle, and then gunning the throttle. :D

Sounds like fun until the bike won't start for some mysterious reason. Then you're just running with a 400 pound bike! :D

And Todd - that's why I never throw anything away. And my garage is a rat's nest.

the shafts are chucked because the side cover case has been plugged and welded....bump start procedure is as follows, rock of the bike and engage third gear,,,,pull in clutch,,,run and run, then jump on the seat side saddle(don't lose your balance)and release the clutch. Some of us have built roller starters using cb 350 starter motors(one motor for each roller),,,,it saves us from banging our cajones with the previous starting method ;D,,,,,,,,,,

Todd: WHYWHYWHYWHY?!?!?!?! hahaha. I'll give you two reasons you should have kept all those shafts.
1. You could give one to me right now ;)
2. You could sell the rest of them on ebay. These kick-start assemblies are going for upwards of $80 on there!

In all reality, I'm just messin with ya. I know how it is to have something that seems worthless to you, so you throw it away, only to find out later that it's worth something to someone else. haha. Oh well. As they say, shit happens.

For anyone who has a similar problem of the kickstart C-Clip coming off and spilling all the parts into the bottom of the case, I just found that a 10mm E-Clip instead of the stock 12mm C-Clip works very well. A new 12mm C-Clip I can pop off with my fingers; the 10mm E-Clip needed pliers to get off.
