my 2 strokes i'd heat cycle twice or three times and then just run it like i stole it... anyone have break in tips of for a newly bored/pistoned 4 stroke?

Progressive loading over the first twenty miles of riding. Try not to keep it at one RPM for too long.

I ran mine up to 5000 RPM in first gear and then used compression braking to come back down. Do that half a dozen times and repeat again at 6000, 7000, and then 8000 RPM. Then ride it like you stole it for the rest of the twenty miles. Don't do this on a cold engine, though. Warm it up first.

You should be good to go after that.

Re: CB350 Sly... holy sh!t, it runs!!!

well, it's done! took it out last night for the first time, just to the gas station and back, and I've been riding around all morning today! I get that a project like this is never quite finished, but it's a runner and it's not going to get materially different any time soon... just bugs to work out. I need to iron out the idle and I've got some early mid throttle lumpiness, but just off idle and as soon as you get into the throttle it's niiice... I have to seal the gas cap neck a bit better and im going to put some kind of Honda badging on it.... but ya, this is the bike!

many thanks to PJ, Sonreir, Surffly and others for technical advice... if you helped me out and I forgot to mention your name I apologize, but I very much appreciated everything. and thanks to all the Do The Ton community for the support and inspiration that kept me going to get to the finish line!

I like it, particularly the rear end that looks right. 8)
Does it get 51 degrees lean ;)

Re: CB350 Sly... DONE!

thanks a lot everyone! i appreciate the comments... it's nice to know that other people think it turned out ok!
i'm in the process of tuning the carbs now so there's nothing to show... if i DO end up changing anything you can actually see i'll toss a pic up in case anyone's interested... wish me luck on carb tuning!

Re: CB350 Sly... DONE!

Re: CB350 Sly... We don't need no stinkin' badges! (or do we?)

Better IMO just know when to draw back I think sticking with the black is plenty classy. Looks nice. But now stop adding things. Perfect as is. I'd rock it proudly. How's the jetting coming?

Re: CB350 Sly... We don't need no stinkin' badges! (or do we?)

ya, good advice! I had no plans to do anything further cosmetically but it doesn't hurt to get some opinions!

I've now got 25 pilots in... waaay better than before. I confess that I haven't tried very hard to tune it at all... was out of town for the weekend and when I got back I was so excited to ride I just tossed in the 25's, turned the screws out 1and a half turns and hit the road! so the idle is still irregular and when it's cold it coughs if you grab a handful off idle or near idle (ok when warm) so I guess I'm close... I'll put some more effort into it shortly!

Re: CB350 Sly... We don't need no stinkin' badges! (or do we?)

Yep, tank badges do make a difference.
I didn't think it would matter, but it does.

Re: CB350 Sly... We don't need no stinkin' badges! (or do we?)

hey gang!
been riding the hell out of the old girl for a month now... carbs not perfect but VERY rideable... all other systems 'go'... 3 kicks to start cold with some choke.... rest of the day after that, first kick unless I get it just wrong and have to do a second. in short, totally reliable. This morning, starts normally, makes a funny mechanical noise waiting for the light onto the highway (possibly in my imagination and unrelated) runs in on the highway to breakfast just fine other than a seemingly higher than usual idle.... come out from breakfast, jump on the kicker like an ape for half an hour, get it running eventually and ride home.... now it just won't start at all. pulled the plugs (they looked pretty good, nice tan insulators, no white or soot) put in a new set... no change...

so, anyone got any clues how it goes from clockwork reliability to shit in an instant?

I hadn't readjusted the cam chain tensioner since I rebuilt... could a new chain have stretched enough to jump a tooth?

I'm just not sure what to look for.... any thoughts welcome!

Re: CB350 Sly... it was fun while it lasted

How are the carbs mounted?
Manifold rubber could be cracked?
Probably worth checking valve adjustment, may have bedded in and be tight?

Re: CB350 Sly... it was fun while it lasted

carb boots are brand new... I'll double check though!
I'll check timing and valves for sure...
thanks for the thoughts. but do these sound like run/no run issues? they seem more like the difference between running bad/ok/good, not all the way from good to nothing?
is it possible for a cam chain to skip? (new chain/tensioner)
