Removing the starter on my sl350, and I was wondering if I could leave the gear on the crank (the one right under the stator). This motor is in good running order, so I'm trying to tear into it as little as possible.
But it's very simple to remove the stator to get the gear off and it's always good to have less rotating mass.
All you have to do it undo ye center bolt on the stator. Then screw a M16 fine thread into the hole until the stator pops off. Then pull the gear and the starter clutch.
But there will be no I'll effects from leaving then.

if it has an M16 fine thread as the center bolt. The stator has threads in the middle that you screw the bolt into. a few cranks and it will fall off in your hand.

Didn't have the M16 thread. Center of the puller was flat faced and fit nicely in there. It worked but I don't recommend it based on that being a taper fit. Taper press fits don't come loose nicely. Little bit of pressure, little more..... PING! It came off but sent the inner components rattling around the work bench with it. Next time I'll wait and go buy myself a $0.10 bolt to do the job.
