CB350F - Cam chain question

Corsair

hey, does anyone know how to check the cam chain on a SOHC Honda for wear? My Honda shop manual really doesn't state how to check it.

Thanks,
Robb

Are you doing a rebuild? If so, I'd replace the chain and the tensioner -- they're a weak link in these bikes. That being said, I've got a 350F that's had a little cam chain rattle for about 7 or 8 years now, no problems, no jumping teeth.

Yeah, I am. was thinking the same thing but wanted to pick some brains smarter than mine first thanks!

Yeah its a good idea to replace but I just tore my 400F down and the tensioner and chain look perfect, almost brand new even.
Its really just up to you, I have in the past replaced them but on this one I just left it alone because it looks good. If I grenade the engine Ill regret it though haha

The tensioner doesn't really go bad, it usually seizes up from not being used from what I know. I took one out of my 400f and it was like new. No play or anything. And if the chain has no play in it reuse it after you inspect the whole thing.

I just bought a 74 CB450 that has the top end apart and I want to replace the cam chain while it's open. Anybody know how many links long the chain is? 128? Any recommended vendors to buy from?

One more question: I see K6 and K7 listed as 74's. Any way to identify which is which? Chain seems to be the same for both.

thanks
John

I took my 400f apart because the tensioner was siezed. All I did was take the flanking bolt out from the case and the adjuster and put a wratchet extension on the bottom piece, gave it a good tap and she broke free. No problems since :)

By "bottom piece" I mean I tore the engine down and had it to the cases

as with all roller chains they stretch and most manuals give stretch dimensions(checked in several locations along run)...usually inches or mm for a specific number of pins..also do a visual on rollers and the chain guides, rollers, etc.
