CB360 Air Filter / pod need some help

So I pulled the air filters today to take a look at them and... they are old as hell and dirty dirty.

I don't even think these are available new anymore. But, not a problem I'm just going to put pods on... well that was until I went down to my local bike shop. When I asked if they could tune the carbs when I put on pods and a 2 - 1 exhaust, the guy said:

"Sure we can do that, but you're going to hate the way it drives with pods. You're going to have flat spots and those are going to annoy the f*ck out of you."

Is this guy right? For those of you with experience with pods, how does your bike ride?

Is there another solution? Of course I didn't save it and now I can't remember where I found it (search doesn't help), but a week ago I read a thread where some guy rebuilt the filters using a FRAM filter element.

Search again for that thread dealing with the Fram element - I remember seeing that before as well.

Pods don't just magically "create" flat spots - poor tuning and design does. Check out the carb theory 101 thread in 1800 cafe help along with the "tuning for modified intake / exhaust" thread by Boingk. Both of which will help you out a lot.

One more thing - it's best to tune your own bike. It's fairly easy, fairly aggravating, but worth learning.

New filters are available from David Silver Spares in London (England)
You can use automotive filters, cut up your old ones and use side plates, glue new filter into place
It's a lot easier than fitting pods and getting jetting right
If you really want to fit pods, remove diaphragm covers and see if you have screw in air jets under diaphragm
I make different sized secondary air corrector that cleans up mid-range with larger mainjets
If you have press in air jets, I would recommend repairing or replacing the filters you have

I have a 360 with pods and dont notice any flat spots.... think buddy was trying to scare you or just doesnt know enough about it. Personally flat spots are related to tuning. I have issues with my 360 but its issues with it being too rich and thats with pods and straight pipes.

Not sure your referring to me but I think you are?

I'm probably the only person in the world in last few years who's had CB360 on a dyno with wideband gas analyser.
You have a problem with mid range richness, what a surprise
It isn't possible to tune it out a bigger mainjet and mixture screw (or other) adjustments.
Among other things, it needs new air correctors
If you search my posts, somewhere is a dyno run showing fuel/air ratio showing where it goes rich (around 4,500 rpm)

No I am refering to the local bike shop dude he refers to. You've been extremely helpful in regards to my 360 so I know you know your stuff.

I'll through a +1 and an amen to pj being a huge help in the carb tuning department. Also I'm running "pod" style filters and have it dialed in pretty good. I'm actually a tad lean in the mids. I think I need a richer needle. Just a tiny bit.

Did you rejet/tune the carbs yourself after installing the pods and filters? Would you mind telling me what you did to the needles/jets and what the temperature is like where you live (i live in texas and right now it's 104 with low humidity so your setup may not work well for me).

I have no idea how to rejet a carb. Looks like it's pretty complicated with lots of small parts. The easy thing to do would be to replace the filters and cleanup the outside of the air filter boxes so they look nice, but I really really want that empty space under the seat. Even if I did that I plan on running a 2 - 1 exhaust mainly for weight savings, so I'm going to have to messed with the carbs anyways, right?

I just looked at some stuff you have posted and wow, you probably know more about modifying these 360s than anybody else. I really really want to mount pods because they look and sound better, but most importantly, they save weight. It will literally drive me crazy if I have to spend days dialing in the carbs and not be able to get them perfect. I may just figure out a way to modify the existing airboxes so they look cool. However, for sure I am going to run a 2 - 1 exhaust. If I did only the exhaust with better flowing flowing and lightened stock airboxes, what do you think I will need to do to the carbs?

Thanks for your help!

Re: PODS it is

So I found how to rebuild the stock air filters and attempted to start it. It is waaayy too much work. I've spent 30 mintues on one filter and it's not even halfway done. That glue is insanely hard and even with a dremel tool and grinding wheel it is taking forever

Therefore, pods are going in. I figure I'll spend as much time trying to get the jetting right as I would have rebuilding the air filters. Beside, I'm changing the exhaust so I'm going to have to mess with the carbs anyways.

Why don't I just buy new filters from Dave Silver, you ask. Well, the last time I ordered parts from England and Australia for my Ninja 600 Streetfighter build they took over a month and a half to get here... I can't wait that long this time. It's summer and I want to ride. Besides, I want that empty area beneath the seat... it just looks better and it saves weight. That means I go faster... that much closer to doin' the ton! ;D

Thank you all for your inputs!!
