If nothing was tweeked then chances are it's a wiring issue I'd think, especially if you have fuel in the bowls and spark during kick.
Sounds like the ignition isn't getting juice once the kick is done and the motor should be picking up the slack.
My SuperIII (e-start only) had the same issue, it would fire when the started was cranking but once you let off (again where the motor should have been chugging along) it would lose spark and die.
Something to look at.

Ok, so I got the bike running, but it won't stay that way.

I let it sit overnight and, in typical fashion, today it starts after 2 kicks. It runs kinda rough and hovers around 1600 RPM with the occasional jump to 3k. I don't touch it for several minutes and it doesn't die. Long enough to get the header wrap to smoke. If I take the choke off it revs really high and dies, if I give it throttle, same thing. Eventually it dies on it's own.

This is the longest it has ever run, so I pulled the plugs and got this:

I know black means rich, but black can also mean oil. They were 'wet' per se right when I pulled them out, but after 5 mins (second pic) they were 'dry'. Didn't smell like oil, but I doubt a gas/oil mixture would be smellable. I wouldn't think it would be running that rich w/pods and pipes, but what do I know?

Am I totally screwed?
 
are your diaphrams OK? I had that issue with the 360 too. What happened is that the diaphram slipped off its ledge and broke the seal. Make sure the diaphram's key is in the proper position and stays that way. Also, make sure the diaphram has the proper seal and stays that way when you replace the cover. It can be a PITA, but I'm 99% sure that's it.

Just a theory :-\

The plugs are probably dark because of running on choke for so long. Then when you take it off choke it may be leaning out(revving up and then dieing). Giving it throttle is giving it even more air than fuel so it dies quicker.

May try to fatten up your floats some(that doesn't cost anything but time) and or re-calibrate your idle mixture screws first(external no need to open up the bowls)?

I wouldn't give up on the jets,unless you are sure they need fattened up/leaned down. Those should come into play at higher RPMs.

Do one change at a time so you know Yes,that helped or no,that made things worse.

There's lots of little things such as is your gas cap venting? Is you petcock REALLY getting enough fuel to keep the bowls supplied? If you put the stock air box on or restrict the pods does it take throttle better etc?
 
hey, just curious... on my roadriders the front tire's rotational direction makes the tire look like its on backwards. but i noticed your tread design looks like its going the right (wrong) way on your bike? I dunno.
 
It kind of sounds to me like you're idle jet isn't fat enough, but I also have to agree with ChrisF's suggestion with the carbs. I know it's a royal pain, but sometimes you just have to crack those bad boys open and see what's going on inside. These bikes are NOTORIOUS for having screwed up diaphragms. And they're also notorious for having PO botch job repairs in them. I've been through this with two 360s. And I'm STILL going through it with another one I just bought. I'm addicted to these little twins (no doubt peer pressured along by great builds by Chris, Mysta, you and all of these other guys that make them so appealing!). As far as re-jetting, it's cheap. Get a few sizes up from stock and try them. If it doesn't work you're only out a few bones. Try http://www.sudco.com/keihinjets.html. You also may look for air leaks in the intake manifolds. Spray a little diluted dish soap on there or WD40 and see if you see it sputtering...these things are old and crack. Just my $.02. Maybe that will help. (BTW I cracked by brittle old intake manifolds when I took the carbs off for disassembly on my last bike, so it's easy to do!) Good luck man!
 
Diggin your 360 man. Mine should be somewhat similar when I'm done with it, but I'm wanting to ride it before I make any major changes.

Put some new plugs in it and see if that helps. I thought for sure that my old plugs were working, but new plugs had her running real nice as soon as they went in.

Is you rear fender a stocker or used from the front? I haven't taken a good look at the stock piece so I don't know what you did there. Either way, it looks sweet.
 
Just bought a 75 360 and had problems getting it started; dropped in a new battery, still nothing. I pulled my plugs and they looked exactly like the pic of yours, black and wet. I just sprayed them down with brake cleaner, cleaned them off with a wire brush, blew them off with the compresser and it fired up like new. Hopefully my seals arnt shit but just cleaning mine off seemed to work fine for me so far.
 
Is that a hash seat dude? You should totally drop the rear a bit more so the rubber hits the hash & smokes dude. Cha!
 
getting things done nice progress. i really dig that color on the tank the pics and descriptions help a lot keep it up

Wrapped and ready to be mounted. Those black zip ties are only temporary. I thought I had some hose clamps, but alas did not. Now i'm either going to paint some hose clamps black and mount them, or just use stainless steel safety wire for a cleaner look. We shall see. I also left the ends unpainted so in the future if I do add the 2 into 1 exhaust I originally planned on, i won't have to strip the paint.
