CB360 Cam/Timing Advancer Position

Maybe I'm overthinking this, but I feel like the service manual might be leaving something out.

I'm rebuilding my CB360 motor and it says to put the generator at "LT" and then line up the cam sprocket with the head and put the timing chain on. It doesn't say anything about cam lobe orientation. So, the cam lobes could be either pointing up or down since the cam sprocket can be attached at one orientation, or you could rotate the cam 180 degrees and attach it like that too.

I never took the spark advancer off of the cam when I took the motor apart since they were all clean and functional, but couldn't my timing still be out of whack if the lobe on the advancer that works the points is off by 180 degrees as a result of me putting the cam and sprocket back together the wrong way?

It doesn't look like I can flip the advancer 180 degrees since its got a slot and peg on it so I'd like to make sure I have everything correct before putting the valve cover back on.

if you are on "LT" which is left top dead center then the left side lobes be pointing down, in order to be correct
this orientation is also top dead center of the compression stroke for the left cylinder

typically the service manual has it all. read carefully and inspect all parts. Usually there are clues.

Timing is not set until you slot the chain into the sprocket and attach it to the cam. Once the cam is in and TDC is selected for one of the pistons, and the LINES on the sprocket are parallel with the top of the head you are fine, tweak teeth on the chain/sprocket until you get that setting. Lobes up or down it doesn't matter, lines lining up when things are bolted together does. There are 2 revolutions per cylinder so up or down is a mater of compression or exhaust cycles.

If you didn't take the advance unit off the cam I would suggest you do so and order an replace the seal BEHIND it. They will leak, just a matter of when and can be had from your dealer or online.

And if you are using a Clymer or some other manual other than the HONDA SHOP manual toss it and find a copy of the Honda manual, can be found for download all over the web.

If it doesn't work one way turn it 180* and try again. Retime of course. (I did the same shit today when I noticed my cam was returning slow, so cleaned everything to the t and made sure it worked perfect). Then didn't know if cam was right, Harley made theirs so they only fit one way, this one two.

But on the back of the advance there's the notch, the line on the cam goes to the other side of it, I thought it'd make sense they both point the same. They don't.
